6XC or 6X47L??

ok..... opinions please.

Deciding on a 6mm. I was thinking of .243AI, but upon seating an 88 berger into some .243AI brass where i want to seat them, i end up longer than my clip length...... Looks a though the 6XC and 6x47L could fit the bill, though performance is down (velocity)

now after running ballistics, with 88, 95 and 105 bergers at 3400,3200 and 3050 respectively, i can live with any/all of these.... This repeater gun is for coyotes/wolves/ plinking out to 600 yrds.

I have mucho LR primers to use (BR2, 215M, 210M) but no sr primers.

Most peoples COAL it seems with the 6XC and 105s seem to be within my needed parameters... Less info found on 6X47L, but both seem highly touted.

What would u go with???

I am almost there!!!! 1-8 twist bbl. finish at 24.....Thats what i am aiming for......
 
I'd go with the xc if i was in your position. You have the primers, you don't need to form the brass, you want to shoot in the winter (small primer vs large primer). Also, I'm not sure what the xc brass costs but I can tell you the lapua brass costs a buck 25 a piece.
 
6mm x 47 Lapua is the most accurate (and least powerful)

I'm a 243 Win shooters and ordered a 1-7.5" Krieger barrel from Mystic Precision and a 6mm x 47 Lapua reamer for PT&G to rebarrel my rifle.
If you're looking for something "better" than a 243 Win, the choices are:
  • 6mm x 47 Lapua (most accurate, best brass, commercial dies)
  • 6mm Swiss Match (also very accurate, excellent brass but difficult to find, no commercial dies)
  • 6XC Norma (very accurate, best track record, excellent brass, commercial dies)
  • 6mm Creedmore (most powerful, no commercial dies)

My only real choices were 6XC Norma and 6mm x 47 Lapua.
I spent months thinking about this and finally decided that I might as well go for the most accurate cartridge.

I would go with the 6xc as well but use a 7.5" twist and 115gn bergers.

An 8" and 105's is like winning the lottery but loosing your ticket.

If mag fit is more important than performance maby the 6x47 lapua is the way to go. 6xc with 115gn is still a pretty long bullet.

Don't worry about brass as both cals are easy to make.
 
For long range, I would go with the 243 or 243 AI of the ones you listed. I shoot 6mm Crusader, which is basically 6mmAI.
 
I went with the 6xc. I started shooting both 115 Berger vlds and Dtacs but after all the testing I'm either going to be using the 105 hybrid or perhaps the 108 Bt target. They both shoot very well and you can run them faster than the 115s. I just shot a bunch of 108s today and they pretty much went into .5-.75 inches at 200m which is more than good enough.
 
I have a 6X47 Lapua using a Alpha ACIS .308 Win magazine and I can run 105 Bergers in the lands of my rifle and there is still lots of room in the mag. I dont think the 115 would be a problem at all. Below are a couple of pics I found from a google search.

BTW the Berger Hybrid 105gn 6mm has a G7 of 0.278 where the 115 Berger VLD is only 0.279.

I picked 6X47 Lapua because I got a good deal on a used one in the EE forum. For what you are going to use it for I think both would work. I hit a 4 liter milk jug @ 1084 yards on the second shot with mine last week.

'm gonna jump in here with 2 cents

I had a rifle built a few years back which was originally intended to be a 6XC, but since the gunsmith didnt have the right reamer, I went with the 6x47. It was all the rage at the time to so I thought, sure why not.

I got the rifle in the middle of January and rushed out to chronograph it and work up some loads.

Well I could count to three between the click and the bang. I've had better ignition on a muzzle loader. Anyway, I had 200 rounds through the barrel and I still didnt have a laod I could live with...

And then I got an idea... Try 22-250 cases for the large primers. Well after some resizing and neck swelling, I got 10 test cases ready and I'll tell you what - I never looked back at those 400 expensive Lapua cases. I shot that rifle for years using 6XC brass resized to fit the 6x47 and it was by far the most accurate easy to shoot rifle I ever had. I had real low SD too - I actually had a 5 shot group with a 1 SD (no BS really) - I had to turn off the chrony after each shot to be sure it was registering. (I weighed everything on a .0001g scale to do it)

If I was to do it again, I would just start with the 6XC and spare all the brass resizing, plus you can get the 115 grain bullets from Tubbs too. They were very good.

Forget about the pissant small primers for 38 grains of powder in the 6x47 Lapua - thats a joke. If in doubt the chronograph will tell you which is better.

AND one more thing... If you can swing it, get the polygonal barrel from Gary Schneider. Mine was just sick how accurate it was. True 1/8 minute rifle on a Remmy sitting on an AICS stock. My gunsmith was a super nice guy Dan Dowling - here's his address.

It is good to hear that you are enjoying that rifle I sold you. I am shooting it brother in 6.5x47. I do however also have a 6x47lapua that I shoot 95gr Sierra MK out of. Here is a picture the bullet beside is a Berger 105.

My 6x47L is extremely accurate. It only took me about 40 rounds total to have a fine tuned load( I got lucky). I have only fired 3 groups at 500 yards with it but one of those were 5 shots into 7/8 of an inch.I also had a 5 shot group less than 0.1 at 109 yards. The barrel has now seen a total of 105 rounds.
For those interested the load is 39.2 grains of H4350 with CCI small rifle mag primers using a berger 108 gr BT. The cases are turned to 0.266 to give a 3 thou neck clearance and bullets are seated 50 thou off hard engrave.
