If I'm doing some small game/varmint hunting, to I need to plug my shotgun to 3 rounds here in NB? As I understand it, this is the case in NL, where it's actually written such that no matter what you're hunting, 3 rounds is the limit and a plug must be inserted.
NB: do you need to plug your shotgun to 3 rounds if NOT hunting Water Foul?

I don't know the laws in your province but for me I leave my plug in all the time because I find it is rare that I need more than three shots and I find it safer if I only have three. easier to keep track of what is in the gun. I use a pump but maybe with a semi you might need more that three.

You only need to plug your shotgun for waterfowl here in NB. Having said that, the only time you ever could possibly want 5 shots is for bear hunting or cormorant hunting.
Correction: another reason I could "possibly want" to have more than 3 or 5 is because I can!!!
I have a varmint license, but thats just my excuse to go into the woods with my shottie. I want 8+ rounds in my shotgun so I can cut down some trees.
Apparently, if you're hunting cormorant, your shotgun does have to be blocked to 3 rounds.

To the OP: As long as you're not hunting cormorant, there is nothing in the regulations in the link above or in the wildlife act itself (seen here: http://www.canlii.org/en/nb/laws/stat/snb-1980-c-f-14.1/latest/snb-1980-c-f-14.1.html ) that states your shotgun has to be plugged while varmint hunting.
A gun with a plug in it is in no way safer and may be less safe. With a plug you can only hold 2 in the magazine. If you want to carry it with out a round in the chamber that means two shots. If two made everyone happy we would see alot more sxs in duck blinds and deer stands.
Your reasoning that ' easier to keep track of what is in the gun' is how people have tragedies. The way to keep track of what is in the gun is to assume it is loaded, cocked and has the saftey off until your finger has explored the chamber and your eyeball has graced the follower. " I was sure it was empty" is pretty hollow when there is no one to hear it.

Despite everyone being a super one shot killer if a deer/coyote is dragging it's self away with it's guts hanging out there are better things to be doing then taking your eyes off it and fumbling with shells. Besides when calling yotes it is very likely you will have multiple animals all standing around watching thier buddy get blasted.

Otherwise, as a respectfull hunter of migratory birds.. there have been many times Ive shot ducks over decoys... fired my last shot(3) and still had more coming in, and wished I.d had five shots.

Why not use two different shotties to avoid trouble: a plugged 12 ga for waterfowl, and an unplugged 20 ga or 16ga for upland and small game? A 16 or 20 ga with #6 or #7 1/2 shot is pretty much ideal for rabbits and grouse and such.
