Tried some point shooting with my TT33 today for the first time. I had read that if you used your first finger to point down the length of the pistol and "point" at your target, you could achieve the kind of accuracy that you might want in a tactical situation. Anyways, I didn't find that it worked so well. I put about 60 rounds downrange and not with much success.

So, any of you guys out there tried this? Interested in your thoughts.

Point shooting works, but it requires a lot of familiarity with the handgun. The first several trips to the range may not be successful.

For dry-fire practice, insert a wood dowel into the muzzle and tape a "target" to the wall.

Clobber, I simulated drawing from a holster and did two point and shots at one target about 10 yards away and then two shots at a second target also at 10 yards which required a shift in approx 10 feet of lateral movement.

I was using a one hand method. My only other trg was the usual sight trg that is typical in the Cdn mil and then my own range time. Apparently, I'm a pretty decent shot with the sights, both with the Cdn 9 mil (Browning) and my Tokarev.

I found that I was hitting quite low and to the right, if I was hitting at all, on a target that was about twice the size of an 8.5 by 11 page.

Thoughts?

Ten yards is a little far for point shooting.

We are taught under 3 m for point shooting, 3-8 m is flash sighting, beyond that you are trying to use your sights. This is just a guideline and it comes down to skill as well.

I was at the range trying it with a few friends. I had a larger group but was impressed. My one friend had a touching group.... We were using my gp100.

Grand, thanks for that. I hadn't really understood the distance guidelines for point shoot. I also wonder how a heavy trigger like the Tokarev impacts the results.

I practice this every time the action range isn't too busy. I'll place 3-5 8x11 bulls targets on boards (outdoor range) and stand 10-15 feet to them (close) and instinctively empty the mag. one handed, wrong handed, change hands between targets, switch to two hands and use the sights for the last target. Aside from the two hands, all other practice is instinctive, no sights, point shooting very rapid fire (as if stressed). with practice and a lot of ammo I'm able to keep all 10 rds in a mag on the 8x11 target. this is good enough for me as accuracy isn't the objective here 8x11 is ;).

i just did point shooting for idpa targets within 3-5m, past that i used sights, took a while before i could though as you have to be pretty familiar with your pistol
