Maynards in Vancouver is holding a firearms auction tomorrow - I am only interested in one item so I am hoping for some comments and feedback on what it's worth (understanding you can't know condition)

It's the A Webley & Scott, Mark I, .455 semi-automatic handgun

I checked out the whole list.

Some items wildly mispriced, going by recent sales: Carcanos at 300, classic Cooeys at $20, some very darned rare items for buckshee almost. Some of the ships' brassware is superb, also fine old navigational instruments. A few items completely misclassified (why would a duck hunter want a line of fire predictor?)

THIS piece, I note, estimated at 600 to 900.

Hmmmm........

Wish I could be there with a Platinum Card and a shaker of salt.

But there are some VERY nice items....... looks like the inside of Lever's shop, about 45 years ago!
.

Some of the estimates are pretty puzzling. Take this for example...

Lebel, 1886/96, 8 x 50 R, bolt action rifle, serial #38480 ESTIMATE: $60 - $90

If only I could find them for that price in Ontario!

or this:

Sale 121 Lot 55B Three military helmets, two German and one British Estimate $ 200-300

the helmets include an original Pickelhaub and a M1916 stallhelm that looks like a painted vet bringback. Grossly undervalued.

Lots of other examples as well...

That one looks a lot nicer than the one at Maynards. The last auction at Maynards I was at had some pretty rough guns. If anyone is bidding without inspection be sure you factor that in.

IMPORTANT COLLECTOR TIP

Do not post photos of rare or exotic guns on gunnutz before you buy or bid on it. You will only drive the price of your desired item up and likely lose it altogether. There are no friends at auctions.

I know, you're right, but on this one I figured it was outside my price range anyway (and was I right!). Besides, on the milsurp stuff, I worry because the last auction had a guy stating he was looking to buy milsurps to deactivate for wall hangers!! Not right!

Same as the guy who responds to a "whats it worth" with a price that would gag a maggot and we all see those here!!!!! Usually quotes a price that is at least three times the blue book price and we all know who does the prices there. Collectors who are looking at getting out of the line...

The one at the Simpson auction was the Royal Horse Artillery model with adjustable sight and stock mount. This is the more common Navy model with fixed (well, it does drift for windage) rear sight and no slot. Probably worth 1500 - 2500.

Thanks for clearing that up on the price. I havent seen that many so I dont know much about them.

No problem. I actually bid a pretty substantial amount on the Simpsons gun but FWIW I thought the sold price was pretty high. I've seen them go for 10K with the stock, which is a heck of a lot rarer than the gun.

So, you going to bid on this one? I'd love to know someone here bought it. Maybe I could touch it someday...

Actually I already have one Navy model. I do hope someone who appreciates them gets this one though.

Just remember that there is 15 to 18% buyer premium as well as 12% HST, so add those up and you'd better get it at a decent price or the pain of ownership will be a bitter pill to swallow....... Most people forget about the "add on's" that can add 50% PLUS to the hammer price. Also, the shipper does not work for nothing. "Been there, done it and have the T shirt to prove it".
