Sks action not closing right?

So I bought and cleaned my 1952 Russian sks. I have not had it to the range yet but when I put it back together I noticed some times the action (silver part)closes and comes in contact with the steel above the chamber (black) rather than sliding over it?
Any one know what I am talking about?

I took it a part and put it back together 3 or 4 times and same thing.
I wont get the range for a week or two but Maybe I should just shoot it and see if it causes any issues. I thought I would put it out to you sks pros first
 
are you sliding the action closed by hand and it hangs up just before full battery, sometimes requiring a light push to pop closed? If so its normal, try pull the bolt back and letting it go. If it still hangs up then there is a problem, if not then your good to go.

I let it go (don't ride it) it strikes the hang up point then closes on it's own 99% of the time. If i ride it it hangs up. Maybe it just needs a few thousand rounds through it to smooth out, I like that idea!!
 
Its ment to slam shut, not be babied closed. Its normal to require hand pressure in order to close it properly with a metallic clunk sound when you dont let her fly with the recoil spring.

Any certain way the recoil spring goes in? I might of had it go shooting across the floor when I removed it the first time. One end has a larger knob than the other but it fits both ways.

The end that has the undulations in the spring is the one that goes into the carrier, not the straight end of the spring.
 
I noticed this when "babying" the bolt closed on mine as well.

If I pop the magazine floor plate open (so the bolt-hold-open isn't being pushed up) it seems to hang up far less.

If the magazine floorplate is closed (and obviously with the mag empty, so the bolt-hold-open is being pushed up) it will hang up far more often. In fact it will hang up about 50% of the time (if not more) if the floorplate is closed, and I manually push the mag follower down, allow the bolt forward enough to pass the bolt-hold-open, get my fingers out of the way, and then baby it forward.

I guess the main thing I'm trying to get across is when you actually have at least 1 round the magazine, it won't be a problem, and definitely not when it's cycling under power, or when you let the bolt slam forward. Once you get to the range I doubt you'll have any problems.

Agreed, When I use to go hunting for whitetails back in N.S. (short ranges) I didnt have much issue closing the bolt slowly and quietly when there were cartridges present.
 
lol are you actually complaining about the bolt hold open device? if you want to cycle the action empty open the magazine end of story.

Or just push the follower down with a finger. If your dumb enough to do so without holding onto the charging handle with your other hand, you deserve to get a digit pinched.

yes the "hole" in the bolt carrier is meant to have the bendy part of the spring in it thus containing the bendyness.
 
As stated by others, the coily part of the spring goes into the bolt carrier. In the video, he also failed the disassemble the gas piston rod extension which is also spring loaded. On a side note, if you move the forward lever which releases the gas tube to it's half way position (about 45 degree), it'll put your SKS in single shot mode. Good to know when at the range if you don't want it to go semi-auto.
