I have a simple question for you all.

Im breaking in my first rifle barrel. I know the schedule for cleaning between rounds. My question is to what extent does the barrel need cleaning.

Am I brushing, oily patch then dry patch or do I just use the patches.

or is it more complicated then that...

McMillan (McMillan stocks) generally states that the whole "breaking in a barrel" is a myth.

Yet others say you have to.

Krieger Barrels on their website says you don't really need to clean the bore during "breaking in" but need to clean the throat a lot instead.

How are you breaking in your new Savage? I bought the exact same gun from Epps last week too.

I agree with Drache I also think it is a myth, usualy I will shot 3 or 4 shots clean it with solvent and dry it out with a few patches .

After that I shoot a string of about 10 then clean 10 more it's done.

Some guys clean after every shot turn around 3 times tap the top of their heads and repeat but that gives me a headache ;) .

40 rounds then a cleaning :D

That's a little to much shooting for my tastes. I like to get a feel for how the barrel cleans before I run 40 rounds threw in an outing.

You will have to find your own way to clean. Its a personal thing. My girlfriend and I have shot together since we started shooting. We started with the same cleaning procedure and figured out what worked for us. Now I can't even watch her clean her gun because it frustrates me. :D

i like it, sounds about right. shoot it, and clean it. no break in needed. I would advise to check your gun and run a patch through the barrel to make sure there are no obstructions to be safe, and then have at her.

hmm never broke barrel when my custom builds arrived. usually 15 rounds then clean up.. sometimes 40+ then clean out the copper.. but thats just me.
Christensen arms Customs however tells you to shoot/whipe repeat that 20 rounds or so then 3/whipe somethin like that.. forgot what the details were.

I was told 1 shot then clean repeat 5 times, 3 shot group clean repeat 5 times, 5 shot groups clean repeat five times. Weather its a myth or not I don't know but I'm sure it wont hurt by doing it

it won't hurt, but its a waste of time and oil when its not really "needed".

Clean barrel before shooting for the first time. Make sure barrel is dry and then go shoot. Clean well after that to get all the carbon out. A light copper wash left behind is no problem just don't overdo it trying to get it all out. If the barrel is a custom one that has been hand lapped, that's all I do. If a factory barrel, I also use JB bore paste for the first cleaning, it not only removes all residue, it also helps lap the barrel as well.

JB Bore Cleaning Paste does not lap steel... it removes fouling.

If you want to test the lapping ability of JB Bore Cleaning Paste, put some on a patch and start rubbing on a piece of steel ... after an hour can you see any difference?

Fantastic video?

Humorous maybe - if you have no respect for firearms.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.
