Question for all the doubles shooters out there is improved cylinder too open for the first target? Am shooting an XT browning with Diana grade chokes and have been using modified and improved modified ,just wondering..:confused:

Well, I vote to ditch the Diana chokes. Pretty to look at, but.....

I changed to Briley chokes and picked up my game 15 percent.

but, pattern your shotgun first. The faster you get on target, the more open your choke can be.... if you are a little slower, as i am, then mod/full gets me more hits. And in sporting clays it is just as critical as doubles.
 
if you shoot fast on fist target any choke will do fine. as "gotjuice" mentioned, check your pattern and see how it will perform.
many people does use IC/Mod mod/IM just depends on whoevers preferances are i guess.
 
I shoot a .010 th. choke with a 1 oz. load for first shot of doubles and it smokes the target. Try a variety of chokes and loads and see what works best. You should put your chokes on paper and make sure they are throwing a good consistent pattern at the appropriate yardage.
 
FWIW, there was an article in Trap and Field a few years ago about the 'big dogs' and their chosen gear. It surprised me a bit that only one of the top 20 was using IC on their bottom barrel for first shot. The rest varied a bit, but for the most part settled around the mod/light mod area. That being said, I believe it was Leo Harrison. He could arguably be the best doubles shooter in the last 25 years.

Choke for smoke, chip for the win, what ever works for you.

IMHO, I like mod, but that doesn't make it wrong for you to use IC.

So many grains of salt around here we are all going to have a coronary. ;)
 
Thanks guys as I said was wondering about the rest of Canada.My club guys use m/ im on the coast but the interior guys I talk to use ic/ mod. They said something about air densities ?? Interesting thing on the Diana chokes as well 2 patterned much better than the factory and 2 much worse must have been the last run on Friday ...:)
 
Haven't shot doubles with Reddog yet but if he needs to shoot the first bird quicker, all he has to do is think of it as if the greenhead is on my side. I shoot light MOD on both barrells and broke 47/50 yesterday at practice and missed 2 first birds trying to shoot them TOOOO fast

I'm on the beginning part of the learning curve with this, but I've settled on M and IM for the first and second shot (so far). I think it matters what loads one is using when considering chokes. Right now it's 1 ounce for the first and 1 1/8 for the second for me. No doubt this will change with practice. Next time I'm out I'm going to try 7/8 oz for the first shot. I'm pretty sure IC would work easily with 1 1/8 oz for the first shot, but my gun didn't pattern all that well with that choke and 1 oz at the range I'm shooting the first shot. It would be nice to try LM. At any rate my theory is that I'll reduce the loads as I learn and get quicker. The good guys I've seen so far are very fast and at least some of them could probably used IC on both. So it goes...Fred
