M&P upgrades

Hi everyone,

So I finally got around to doing my challenges yesterday and now it's on to the waiting game for my license. In the mean time, one of the guns I plan to start with is the M&P9 or 40 (not 100% sure yet but unless someone in the force can hook me up, the price of 9mm ammo is irresistible). I tried the gun along with a few others and I got a feel for what I read in terms of its trigger being odd.

I'm obviously not experienced enough to know what I want out of a trigger feel, so I was wondering if you guys could list for me good mods to get all at once. I plan to use this for competition in the future.

Sorry I know it's a bit of beating of the dead horse and I did read the existing threads but I'm still not totally clear on what the best upgrades are.

For instance, which one of these do I want:

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Comp Kit in both my 40 and 45. With the complete kit installed I was getting ~2lb pulls in my .40 . Which is pretty light. Through some experimenting I mixed and matched the APEX with factory springs and have it at 2lbs 10 ozs now. I have my .45 at 3lbs 5oz with a different combination of APEX and factory. I definitely recommend the APEX gear.

It would be better if you could shoot a M&P with an APEX kit to really get the feel to decide what works better for you.

I have the Apex Competition Action Enhancement Kit (CAEK) on its way now. Should be here any day now. I found the 6 lb trigger on my M&P 9 to be too heavy for competition use, and it was really affecting my group size. I love the feel of a 2.5 lb trigger, and I will get this M&P set up as close to that as possible.

That said, 2.5 lbs of trigger can be pretty light for guns that are used outside of competitions like IPSC. What do you intend to use this pistol for?

Thanks guys! I'd love to try different ones but I don't know anyone with one of these except an officer buddy, so I don't have access to much variety. I do know I dislike the stock one, it felt rubbery. I liked the trigger on the Glock.

How about the third link, the "Forward Set Sear And Trigger Kit". All of the things it advertises sound like something I want... I think.

fuchsix, for now I just want to practice so just having fun at the range. But eventually I want to get into competitions like IPSC.

At $160 thats seems pricey to me, but I haven't tried that set up so I can't comment on it. If you want to take the plunge by all means. I'd like to hear a review of it. Based on what I have now I don't know how much better it would be at approx twice the price of a Comp Kit or DCAEK kit.

Keep us posted.

Thanks, I will look into it more and if I go with it then I will definitely post a follow-up. I'll try to get input from experienced shooters as I don't envision mine being terribly insightful.

Most people who have shot my M&P really like the trigger, it has a nice light smooth take up stage, and then it breaks clean at just about 4lbs. The reset is distinct. It took some messing with (and some shooting) to get it there - but the M&P is easy to work on, and the parts are available. My trigger has the Apex sear, and all factory springs. I took out the firing pin block and polished it, and all contact parts were polished with 1500 grit and followed with Flitz. After you do all that, don't forget to deflect the trigger bar toward the centre of the pistol, to make the reset more noticeable. The gun is totally reliable (20,000 rounds +) and very shootable.

I shoot a M&P and a Pro, both 9mm. Don't like white dots, changed the sights on the M&P. Do like fiber dot fronts. New sear in the M&P. Major upgrades to both this season, installed a pair of extended Storm Lake barrels with integral comps. Really like the way they shoot!

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of a source for the FSS, (Forward Set Sear And Trigger Kit), in Canada, or whom I could order from?

Thanks,
Cal.

I believe "most" of us are getting the COMP/DCAEK kits through Dillion Precision (I did) or Brownells. As of yet there isnt anyone in Canada that carries APEX. With the FSS kit being over $100 I think we are SOL

Make sure you do your homework. These modifications to an M&P will prevent you from shooting in the "Production Division" and shooting 9mm in Open or Standard division will put you at a disadvantage when being scored against bigger calibers.
That being said if you are thinking of getting into IPSC then please shoot what you have. It's sad to see someone spend big money on a gun and then realize they either don't like IPSC or the gun wasn't the best choice.

You should be able to apply for an import permit to bring in the FSS, I there there are a few individual who've done this for various 100+ parts, there should be a sticky in the Black Rifles section... nice step by step

Thanks guys, please keep the tips coming!

I'm not too concerned about the gun being competition legal, I will get what I want first and figure out where I can compete with it.

Sorry for the newb question but what is this $100 cutoff?

Basically the US has imposed a $100 limit on exporting gun components from the US. Essentially you can order up to $100 from any company that has the proper exporting licencing in place. i.e. Brownells.

If you search ITAR on this site there are numerous posts that explain it detail.

Thanks, read up on it. Got falsely excited about the 500 limit, oh well. I wonder if Brownells would split up the parts into 2 shipments... seems like a reasonable and legal thing to do.

Great, now I REALLY can't wait to have my license. Maybe I can take a drive up to the government and get them out of the 19th century and into the awesomeness of faxes and maybe even email.

Especially now that I've got a good source for the gun that the M&P will complement. Yeah yeah I know, I can't help it though:

I know some gunners here have split their order from Brownells into 2 orders to keep it under $100 for each. With the FSS coming with the new 'Glock style' trigger, I don't think you can split that bad boy to get it under $100.

That said, I seem to recall seeing the new trigger priced at $75 on the Apex website. Maybe contact them directly and see if they have a retailer that can sell the FSS and trigger separately, and ship it to Canada.
