Hey Gunnutz

As of yesterday i am officially a first time gun owner and decided to start with a 1952 sks because ive herd good things and the price was for sure rite.
i got the gun home and took it out of the box looked great other than the Cosmoline witch really wasn't to bad to remove.(and safety lever explained in other thread). my problem was they must have missed a spot on the under section where the gas tube is because in a small section there was a build up of corrosion and rust (on the outside of the tube) i removed it with some sandpaper as best i could and it revealed some shallow pitting. afterwords i gave it a thin coat of krylon paint to prevent any further rusting my question is is this going to be a safety issue? is there any chance of it breaking or cracking? should it be replaced?

I had one like that on a '53 Tula and the pitting was worse under the wood (almost completely rusted through). I wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't removed the handguard. You might want to carefully drive the pin out and inspect the whole tube.

No safety issue there my friend! No gas pressure on that part anyway, buy ammo and blast away:rockOn:

There isnt enough pressure build up in there to be an issue in my opinion. There is not a perfect seal between the piston and tube.

You can't even get a good enough seal when you put your finger over the end to keep it from sliding down "very little suction".

If the piston gets even slightly undersized/worn out, it may short stroke the action causing issues.

All of this points toward low pressure levels in the first place, so in my opinion you are good to go.
