SKS front sight post

OK, so picked up my 1954 Tula refurb from LeBaron this afternoon. Got home and of course started tear down right away to see how much cosmoline; not terrible at all.

After a while noticed front sight post is WAY off to right of bore center line and also WAY off to right side inside of sight guard. Tried to carefully pin punch round base of sight back to the left; seized solid!

Didn't want to get brutal with it so gun is reassembled ready to go back to LeBaron, "all sales final" or NOT. But before getting all worked up figured I'd run it by you all and see what opinions are out there.

These guns are old. You need to use penetrating oil on the front sight for a day and drift it loose with a brass punch and hammer before you go to the range. Once it moves, it will move again.
 
OK Fiddler, will do the penetrating oil soak. Tornado, it seems the front post requires a "funky" tool to loosen post without buggering it up? If you guys got any ideas on tools I'd love tohear. Thanks.

notch a small pc of tube or try small needdle nose pliers it should not be to tight but it won`t move unless you loosen it i know trade ex should have some and they ship fast

Get a punch, preferably brass, and knock the bugger loose. Its been sitting for 50 or 60 years. Once you've got it moved back and forth a few times, you can then take it to the range for some fine adjustment.
 
drive it over with your car. that will loosen that sucker up!
lol anyway that happend to my ol marlin... rubbber mallet always works

The front sight adjustment tools work well for front sights that are not rusted up or seized from sitting for 50+ years, they will only break in half. Get your buddy to hold the rifle while you smack the crap out of it a few times to make it move. Once it moves, then you can use the front sight tool with no problems as it was designed to be used.


Here is a hint: if it doesn't move before you go to the range, it probably won't move when you are there. You wasted a trip to the range, ammo, and a front sight tool.
 
Well, the worries are over. LeBaron took the gun back without issue. Seems that in 3 weeks they sold some 30 plus SKS's. So right now have no gun but walked out of there with 1,320 rounds of Romanian surplus. $230.00 tax in. Thanks all for the feed back, was very much appreciated.
