WoW!
Ditch that bolt and DON'T use your rifle with that bolt in it please.

I thought the the M1a/ M14/M305 Bolt had no firing pin spring in it

Is it possible that that bolt is one that some one has tried to install a spring on the firing pin?

The bolt does contain a spring, two of them actually. None are on the firing pin. The spring you see on the bottom is the ejector spring.

The bolt is toast. The issue or question I would have is why? As I stated earlier, it looks like it was chaffing (rubbing) against something which eventually (through abrasion) caused the wear.

What does the hammer (on the trigger assembly) look like? The underside of my old (norky) bolt is nice, smooth and concave. No abrasion marks like yours. It's almost like it was ground down with a fine stone or like two bearings with little lubrication, the metal is worn down, almost paper thin.

Thanks for all the input . Im glad Im a fussy old fart. I always take things apart and rebuild myself, especially if it can kill me. I WILL NOT be using the weapon, and Im going to have a nice chat with the guy in the shop...If this was the States someone would be suing his ass....But hey...Sh-t happens. I know hes gonna be torn up about this getting through. He can at least do an autopsy on the rifle, this sort of wear doesnt just happen, there has to be a cause. Might be worth whipping your bolts out and having a quick look tho :)

Since this bolt is already pooched, I say it makes a good candidate for destructive hardness testing. It would be nice to have some additional data on the 2011 batch of Norincos.

Bolt wear Final note.
Took it back to the dealer today and no problems. He swapped me his personal 2009 model and took the faulty one apart to be parted out and scrapped.
Really cant thank you guys enough for all the input, and not one person said it was my fault through poor maintenance etc.

Heading up the range at the weekend get it zeroed and have a bit of fun :)
