Long Branch No.4 Mk.1

Does the handle rotate all the way down until it is against the butt socket, and then it springs back up?

I had just purchased a Long Branch Mk.1 dated 1943 and I'm having an issue with the bolt. The bolt will not lock closed when a round is inserted in the chamber. When you push the bolt down to lock it, the bolt will spring up.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to pass along any recommendations that would assist me in correcting this problem.

Thanks

Jason

Does the bolt match the serial number on the action? Is the bolt head screwed on all the way?

You would not be able to put the safety on with the bolt in the action and the action open. The safety will not cam back wit the bolt open.

ahhhh I see.

Sorry, used a bunch of guns in the past two weeks and one of them wouldnt close if the safety was on. Apparently not the LE which I thought it was. And since I dont currently have a LE in my safe I couldnt test.

Like Pblatzz, I am wondering if the bolthead is screwed all the way in. If the bolt handle turns all the way down to the butt socket, the head is screwed in. If the bolt handle doesn't rotate all the way to fully locked, this could be the problem.

pull the bolt and try to turn the head closed another turn.

I had a No4 that did this as well. As soon as you closed the bolt all of the way with it ready to fire it wouldnt lock and it would spring back up and out. I found out that the bolt was pooched. Had to get a new bolt and it fixed the problem. Your best bet would be to take the bolt completely apart and see if the lock inside is broke.

Sounds like the locking lugs could be shot?... I think if the bolthead was not screwed down fully you wouldn't be able to close the bolt at all, let alone have it spring back up.
