Greetings just looking for opinions accounts info in general
have been looking at this platform for my first longer distance
target rifle in a 308
Basically like the idea of shooting at 200 yards and beyond
however dont really want to bust the bank on a 2000.00
dollar 700 with the addons .
What do you all think

Thank you

How about something like this instead?

Site sponser Ellwood Epps has Savage 10 Precision Carbine in .223 for $767

You could also get this Savage 10 FCP-K in .223 for $807.

They do sell both rifles in .308 for the same price, I just didn't see any listed in stock. You can also get a couple of Remingtons in the same price range. The "Night Train" may have gotten better with age, but I doubt it. I have to draw the line at buying a rifle thats name sounds like a fortified wine.

Have you considered .223? It's an excellent cartridge for the range. With hand loads it will give similar long range performance to a .308 and is cheaper to shoot.

You'll get no shortage of opinions on here on the best rifle to start with, but I can't recall anyone ever recommending a Night Train.

For under $2000 you could choose from a variety of very capable Remington 700s or Savages, and a good quality scope.

Here is something to consider.

You could do this for about $1100 before tax. That would include a new Stevens 200, Choate Vamint stock (I would suggest another $50 for the Choate Tactical or Bell and Carlson Medalist), Timney trigger, and 30" McGowen barrel (26" is $50 less, shorter barrel, better stock!). Another $250ish would get you a Bushnell 10X scope if cash was tight, more on glass is better, $500 - $800 should do. The Harris bipod clone makes a great stand, not such a great bipod with all that weight sitting on it. The barrel, stock, and trigger came from Jerry aka Mystic Precision. There are a few other helpful fellows here that can provide you with similar stuff.

It can shoot. Five shots at 100 yds.

Load development is NOT finished. :D It never is...

Hi I'm looking to buy my first real sports car. I've been researching about this one and I'm wondering if you have any thoughts.

It is a 1987 Fiero

Something I'd like to see on a standardized test:

Mossberg is to precision as a unicycle is to the Tour de France

Some good advice here. I would recommend also abandoning the Night Train in favour of some of the above posters ideas.

Mossberg is to precision as a unicycle is to the Tour de France

I know Mossberg isn't the best rifle ever created, nor do I use mine for long distance shooting, but I have a 4X4 in .30-06 and that firearms shoots very straight and accurate. I haven't had one problem with it and any that has used it and fired it has had the same results, it shoots exactly where you point it. I don't understand everyone's hatred for Mossberg. Then again, I agree that I wouldn't start with a Nigh Train for long distance, precision shooting.

There were some complaints about problems with this rifle when they first started to market it (can't remember what). Thing is your paying for a bunch of Taccool junk. Better to get an arguably better rifle and put some quality accesories on it, instead of the out of the box "SWAT" (or whatever) rifle.

I can- they made a bolt with the handle press-fitted into place (splined on one surface, smooth on the other mating surface) that in some cases, failed catastrophically and caused serious injury to the shooter.
Google "mossberg night train wreck" and start reading.

Good advice. Do a search, the results are eye opening at best. I would seriously consider another platform. If the brake is of a large concern to reduce recoil and add that "tacticool" look I have a low round count savage model 10 24" factory barrel with a brake I could sell you cheap with the load it likes if you were to go with a stevens or savage platform. The EE is awesome for slowly customizing a rifle as long as you select one with an even semi-strong support from the aftermarket. Heck I even have an aftermarket stock that would go cheap for that platform. Look around, hold a few, see what YOU like, and take from the advice what you will. Do not rush this decision as you may regret it.

Have both in .308. Great! Rifles. I would go for them in a heart beat. .223 is a good option as mentioned. But I like my chubby .308 haha!

Hope you find what you need.

I would consider a 700 sps varmit in .223 or .308, add a ok optic like a midlevel bushnell or something of the sort in the 250-450 dollar range.....or maybe a savage model 12 vlss (ithink thats the model i am looking for....)
these, in any combination would be far superior than the night train will ever hope to be....(I admit they are eye catching, but then again, so are car accidents)
