Rossi RH 45Colt and 250Gr XTP (.452), 'WTF?' class question

Hi ALL
Tried to put aforementioned bullet in new 45LC Win brass by hands and it went in almost flying, way too easy to my taste. Running case through sizing die did not help.

I plan to reload for Rossi Ranch Hand 45Colt. Am I doing something terribly wrong? (not according to Sierra manuals, listing loads for .4515'' bullets)?

I believe the original specs for the 45 colt called for a .454" bullet.
The expander ball in your sizing die might be set up for that diameter,
try resizing a case without the expander.
Other options include getting a smaller expander or using .454" bullets.

All I find on subj is pre-WWII firearms chambered in .45 Colt were using .454 but later switched .452 to cut costs. I also believe that .45LC Rossi bore is closer to .452 (did not slug it tho).

I did remove expander.

I'm pretty sure case tension is supposed to do most of the bullet holding.
Well, thats all I know about reloading the Colts 45.
Maybe BenH will put in 5c, anybody with an EK avatar should be good for an idea or two.
 
45 colt is supposed to be crimped partially to hold the bullet and partially to build pressure(mostly in revolvers). Heavy loadings are supposed to have a heavy crimp.

That being said I thought those .452 XTPs were supposed to be a 45 colt hunting round? Never used them so I can't comment but I do know that with my Lee carbide die I haven't had problems seating .452 bullets.

Maybe check your case wall thickness and brass diameter and compare it to spec? Could have thin brass or something, or maybe too hard and springs back too much.
 
I've been loading 45 colt for my Rossi 92 using win brass and 250gr XTP's without any issue.

Are you sure your dies are all set right? I'm using RCBS dies and have had no problems.

I DO crimp all my 45 colt and 454 casull loads, but the case itself definitely has decent tension on the bullets before I do so.

I will re-check them but yes, I (was) sure.
