Since the original "heads up" for Maynard's Auction last April 14th. was posted in the Milsurps forum, I am posting this one here too.

I am a bit curious about the Internet bidding. SMELLIE and I bid on eight items, and according to the prices, we should have won some.

Maynards is now claiming a "computer error" on their internet bidding, and the items were awarded to "someone in the room.".

Did anyone else bid on this auction? If so, did anyone win anything with an online bid?

Might be interesting to hear of other peoples experiences with this Auction company.

I've had this happen with a few other auction houses. What it means is someone slipped a "brown envelope" under the gavel so it did not make a noise at your bid. :)##

Less hassle for them. I get it but still isnt right. I emailed asking about online buying and shipping. Got very little info back. Also stated fees plus a box cost plus shipping and handling, plus taxes. I gave him up.

The first one I went to was OK, just OK. People just don't seem to realize that you need to add at least 25% to what you're bidding to cover HST and the bidder's premium. Add another 2% for using a VISA®.

The others I've been to were ridiculous. The way they deal with internet bids is a joke.

On top of that, what some idiots (present company excluded, of course) were bidding was insane.

Ouch, you "won" but didn't! That really sucks. I have been to one auction physically and bid on 4 items on this one, online, and won one. I wasn't impressed this time 'round with an email exchange I had with the VP Fine Arts (personal complaint) but I don't have much else to comment other than I feel for you.

Were did the Lebel go?

Hmmm, one gun disappears from the list, another sells to an in house customer for less then the email bid, and then this one.

The internet is a very exciting way to increase an Auction house's customer base , without increasing building (and associated) costs. Seems that Maynard's does not want to take advantage of this exciting new way to augment its existing customer numbers.

This smells fishy- and nobody wants to deal with a fishy company.

just my $0.02 worth.

I've done a fair bit of bidding and (winning) on online auctions from smaller auction houses. Generally not a problem at all. Been burned once on an item that was so obviously a fake that I sent it back and the site reversed my CC charges - no questions asked. I also cancelled bids on similar items after I had won and again no hassle.

Sometimes you loose out because you're outfoxed. I've even outfoxed myself in bidding, winning an item that I was bidding on to distract another bidder. :bangHead:

Sometimes your PC f***s up and takes its sweet time refreshing and you find you've been outbid and the auction has closed  (tip: have a fast connection).

But its always caveat emptor! Know all the costs involved and the laws regarding importing into Canada and exporting out of the USA or wherever. Keep in mind if its heavy - its going to cost you in shipping. And let the auction house know which carrier you prefer. Some have high brokerage fees.

And if you feel you don't trust an auction site - don't patronize it.

Being outbid is one thing; it happens all the time, BUT..... when your bids go in at 6 AM and are receipted, posted in their log and then ignored, you have a problem.

Buffdog is ticked over the Martini he should have got.

I am ticked over the VV which I should have got.

And about 8,000 guys are ticked because the Lebel disappeared from the list after being advertised.

That's 8,002 people ticked.

How many more can they afford?

Why would they do this? The higher the bid the more they make. To add insult to injury, the auction rattus won was on my behalf. Looks like the only positive outcome of this auction was my dealings with this true gentleman.

Nothing to do with Maynards, but I have seen auctioneers explain that there are absentee bids, and that anyone who wants to check can confirm this.
I've also seen bidding open with what appeared to be an absentee bidders maximum bid, and the item get knocked down to this single bid. That is, the bidding didn't open at $50 from the floor, and work up to an absentee bid of, say, $500. Opened at absentee bid of $500, with no lower prior floor bids.
Guess the rule is to know who you are dealing with, and what the rules are.

I wondered how that would work. Seems scummy but without a written set of rules that would be a risk. The Mosin I bid on went for the max bid (as per desporterizer's instructions :D) and I was worried maybe that's what they did.

It probably was but we will never know for sure unless someone here attended in person.

I have bid through Maynards before, and as it was a live auction I was bidding online against people in the room. I won my auction and it was honoured.

Actually, our bids were placed on Friday, using the Maynards website, and their bidding Agent Company, ARTFACT. After SMELLIE and I talked, we increased some of our bids early Saturday Morning, and the bids were accepted and confirmed when we went to the Maynards Website.

We were registered to bid after jumping through their hoops regarding registration, and were approved for bidding.

I had to work that Saturday, so could not go online for the actual auction, so we had to rely on Maynards "Absentee Bidding" system.

What we were curious about was "did anyone else have bids in using the online bidding system that were accepted and did they win anything with those bids?"

Someof our bids might seem low, but when you add about half again for the "buyers premiums" and other charges, it puts the item in the approximate value of value of what it would have been worth to us.

Lets hope Maynard Auctioning ( And some of the others ) listen to the comments of their customers, for having them clean house would be a win-win situation all around.
