I'm in the market for a new spotting scope and I have no idea what to get.The small city I live in doesnt have a place for me to stop on by and compare all the scopes.

out of the 4 scopes....i'm Leaning towards the zeiss victory diascope in the 85mm objective lens, with the 20x75 power eyepiece....however i'm concerened that the 85mm is going to be to massive for scouting from my truck, and maybe I should go for the 65mm instead???

I Live mostly in the praires and use my current spotting scope a leupold gold ring 15x30x50 for looking at deer in the summer and ducks on the lake during october. When I hunt big game I never pack a scope around with me while i'm walking, but my scope is in my truck, and yet again I keep thinking is this BIG 85mm zeiss going to be a newsance??? Getting in the way

If I did decide to go with zeiss,Given that I only use my spotting scopes from my vehicle,do you think I should go with the 65mm or the 85mm???

An input would be appriciated,thank,WJ!

My 88mm Kowa hasn't been a problem for range, field, and truck use. It is a little bulky for mountain hunting, but it is actually quite light for the size.

I would go with the 65mm Zeiss. You don't give up very much in my experience and if your hunting needs should ever change in the future you are covered.

Go with the Zeiss Diascope 85mm objective, 20 to 75 power eyepiece. You won't go wrong when I use it this fall.:D

The Kowa is the best you can buy, sorry Germany, the Japanese have you beat on this one. Look on the line at a BPCR shoot and the Kowas will outnumber the Swaros significantly.

I cannot comment on the Kowa other than this: I have only heard great things, and I am in the process becoming a dealer.

The most popular spotter I sell for hunting is the Swarovski 65mm with 20-60x ocular (either in standard or HD, angled or straight) - it is the scope of choice for serious hunters and professional guides.

The scope has many desirable qualities, however there is one key reason why it is so often selected: in comparing the specs of the "big three" brands (Swaro, Leica and Zeiss), the Swaro has the highest mag range in the 60mm class - the Leica caps-out at 50x and the Zeiss used to have max of 45x (now 56x). Furthermore, the Swaro 65mm HD comes in at roughly $300 less than the Zeiss and $650 less than the Leica.

With respect to using a 60mm class vs. an 80mm class for hunting, the increased exit pupil (i.e. light gathering) of the larger scope is offset by its weight and bulk.

If you wear glasses please please please try them before you buy them. I think you will find the Zeiss better than Swaro if you wear glasses. Truth is you NEED to try a Kowa, they are amazing optics, and are fast taking over the bird watching world. I don't think you will go wrong. The LR shooter I shoot with has 7 of them, slowly replacing all his swaros.

Yaa alot of people sure seem to put the Kowa's on a High Pedestal.....After reading alot of reviews it seems that the Kowa's and the zeiss 85 Diascope come out on top.....even though some guys swear by Leica and swarovski and Vortex ....seems everyone has there opinion................

My problem is I have to look through all these scopes before I buy one and who the hell around medicine hat has Kowa's let alone Vortex in stock:rolleyes: I doubt that anyone in calgary like WSS or BPS has Kowa scopes....Heck they dont even carry gun solvent half the time i'm in there:p

I dont wear glasses yet,so i'm good to buy whatever.....Except for the Canadian tire $99 Special :D

Vantage Point Outfitters out of British Columbia sells Howa spotting scopes. Give them a call and see what kind of service they offer.

Among birders, who are absolute fanatics about optical quality, the Kowas pretty much outnumber all the German and Austrian makes combined. Another good dealer to check into is Pelee Wings Nature Store in Leamington, Ontario. If I were in the market for optics, they are the first place I would check. Good prices, extremely knowledgeable and they carry and stock just about every make and model out there.

My buddy has an 80mm spotter that is fantastic for range use, but I wouldn't even consider carrying that bazooka around for hunting or scouting. Even if it weighed nothing (and it certainly doesn't!) the sheer bulk of it is ridiculous. It might be okay for scouting from the road using a window mount.

I can highly recommend them, the prices were good, and the service excellent.
