Hey,

Silly question, I cannot find the answer, although I know I have before... Where can I find the limits for bow and turkey hunting in Ontario, I just want to know where there is bow only turkey hunting and where guns are allowed to hunt turkeys.

Thanks!

Where you may hunt turkeys can be found in the Ontario hunting regulations.

What you can use, whether it's a shotgun and bow zone or bow-only zone would be determined by the municipality's discharge by-laws.

Is there a map somewhere depicting this and where can i find this info? I dont understand because there are towns that say no gun hunting turkeys but people can hunt waterfowl with guns there....

I know the hunting regs say u can hunt turkey with bow or gun... they jsut dont say where its allowed...

What I am trying to ask as well is if waterfowl hunting and controlled deer hunt are not subject to the no discharge laws? Because that means that in all these areas no one could ever hunt waterfowl.... I know I have hunted areas for geese where you can only use a bow for turkey...

If you're in a no discharge zone as declared by the municipality then you cant discharge. Further to that, most municipality that have a no discharge of firearms have a no discharge of pretty much anything (bows, pellet guns whatever).

However, you will find that many of these municipalities DO NOT INCLUDE legal hunting activities in the "no discharge by-laws".

So as long as you are a licensed hunter you can hunt. Just dont go out and randomly target shoot.

Look up where you want to hunt in the ON hunting regulations. Determine what tool you want to use. Then call the municipality and talk to a by-law officer.

My GUESS is that will find that unless you're hunting right in the centre of town, you will be good to go.

EDIT - For what its worth, I just did a quick search of "the Town of Niagara on the Lake" which form as far as I can tell, includes "Virgil" and couldnt find ANY by-laws relating to firearms discharge. I also dont see any specific regulations to "bow hunting for turkeys" in WMU 88 so I cant see why you couldnt use a gun.

DO NOT take my word as gospel. Call the local MNR office (speak to a CO) and call the municipality.

Thank you! Super helpful, I wish it was not so hard to find these rules, they want us to follow them but its a task to learn about them

First, pick your hunting location(s). Determine what WMU your hunting location is in using the WMU maps on the MNR website or in the reg book, and consult the Turkey section of the Ontario hunting regs to be sure that turkey hunting is permitted in that WMU.

WMU maps: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@fw/documents/document/239845.pdf

Next determine what municipality your hunting location is in and consult that municipality's website to pull up its discharge by-law. If the by-law is unclear, call and speak with a clerk. Generally, any place that forbids discharging a shotgun will also forbid bows, so there shouldn't be much grey area.

You can also consult the OFAH website to pull up their Sunday gun hunting map to determine whether you may use a shotgun on a Sunday in your hunting location.

List of municipalities that currently allow gun hunting on Sundays:
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@fw/documents/document/275974.pdf

Of course, you must also be sure your shotgun is in compliance with the regs:
10ga-20ga, #4, 5 or 6 shot

or if you're using a bow:
draw weight of 18kg/39.7lbs and arrows must be 600mm/23.6in with a 22mm/.87in wide broadhead with 2 cutting edges...which ought to cover pretty much all modern hunting bows as long as you're not using field points to tip your arrows.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Happy to help.

With the exception of say a whole lot of target shooting, I wonder if anyone has actually ever been bothered by the bylaw people. I've never heard of it. Unless maybe your right in a city.
