What's everyone using for ammo these days?

I used to shoot 30gr vmax as my gun loves them. They used to be devastating on small game and varmints but tonight I have had my 3rd failure to expand and this time I have the recovered bullet

I'm beginning to loose faith in these lil buggers

Back in the fall I shot a jack rabbit and it ran close to 100 yards before piling up. A very small entrance and same size exit thru the ribs. A few weeks ago I popped a groundhog and he made it to his hole. Normally they die instantly with a 2" hole exiting not this guy I saw the dirt kick up in 2 places after the hit. And finally tonight I take a groundhog at about 225 yards and he starts running and spinning. A 3rd shot ended him but I recovered the 30grain vmax from just inside the rib cage (entered between front left shoulder and neck) minus a the red tip and a small dent in the hollow its perfectly intact. No expansion at all. I realize it was a far shot but the vmax is suppose to be a fragile bullet is it not? These 3 seeming failed bullets came from the same pack. Should I try another brand or just buy another box of the hornadys and try again?
 
Try Winchester Supreme's in the 30 grain or 34.
You will be impressed.
The 30 grains are rated at 2250 fps,
while the 34's are rated at 2120 ffps.
 
Federal 50gr hollow points work well..Of all the 22 mags I ever had, most shot the best with these...CCI Maxi-Mags were one of the worst..
 
I have been shooting a 22 mag. since 1970, won't even try to put a number on the amont of ground hogs, cats etc have fallen victim to it, all with Winchester 40 gr. hollow points.

I have never tried these new 30 - 34 hot shots. Seen some the other day in a shop but at almost 15 dollars a box I can't see where there going to be that fantastic to be worth the extra bucks.

I have never even tried a shot with 22 mag at 225 yds. Thats a long stretch.
The cartidge and bullet was not intended for those distances maybe your expecting to much. Best look at a 204 Ruger if you like to shoot distance.

The other surprise to your post is you found ground hogs in Ontario to shoot at. You can't find one in the southern georgian bay region.
 
My levermatic loves the new hornady stuff. Have not had a chance to hunt with it yet but expands (explodes?) awesome on thick paper or plywood.
 
My gun won't group the 45gr dynapoints at all. I had time to lay prone tonight and I shoot a lot at 200 yards on target. Usually shots are 80-120 yards while hunting. Or ambush hunting frozens ditches. I had tried remington accupoint loads awhile back and they grouped well but I haven't seen them in a long time.
 
I have had really good luck with the CCI 30 grain v-max load on gophers. I have burned through about 4000 or so and always got explosive results with them. I recently ran through 1000 of the federal 30 grain premiums with the speer gold dot hollow point and they are even more violent on impact but they seemed to cause a lot of barrel heat and don't group quite as well. CCI loads this bullet too so I may have to try that. These new bullets have changed the 22 mag in a big way for the good. It is an honest 200 yard gopher whacker with better down range energy and bucks the wind better than a 17 hmr.

Yep every gun is different, my Browning T-bolt loves CCI maxis and puts 10 into a 1/2" at 50 mtrs. I've never worried about terminal performance of a rimfire, as long as I hit..... I'm happy. Shoot whatever your gun shoots best and don't worry about them groundhogs gettin' away they're dead regardless.
By the way 225 yds with a 22 mag.....NICE SHOT.
 
Thanks. Unfortunately it took 3 shots. First took him in the lower jaw. 2nd was just over him the 3rd connected well just didn't expand. My gf wasn't happy seeing him flip several times

I'm going to buy a box of everything listed in this thread and see how my chuckster likes them.

I have noticed the last year or two that ground hogs in Eastern Ont are slowly making a come back.
I was reluctant at first paying $15 for the Supremes
but bought a box one day to try.
They are worth it.
$2 bucks more than other .22mag, for ammo that you hunt and preditor control with is NP for me.
I will plink with the $9. stuff.
They are the fastest and hold accuracy at 100 yards,
that other so called premium ammo of other brands wont do
in my Marlin heavy barrel rifle.
They all shoot great at 50 yards though, i will give them that.
You have to experiment like i have done.
Do accuracy test's, take different ammo and shoot them at 50 and 100 yards at beer or pop cans filled with water.
The supremes will shred the cans into many pieces while other brands just split them open.

.22WMR is a good round for small game, and will kill coyotes and foxs inside 100 yards with the right ammo,
but other than that look into a .204 or .223 for much better performance.
 
i picked up probly 10+ boxs of diffrent 22wmr ammo. evey thing from 30g polytips to 50g. tnt,hollow point, FMJ.....ect. i ended up buying hornady 30g vmax. shoots 1"/100yrds consistantly. have had a few 1/2-3/4" groups in the mix as well. still havent shot any critters with the 22wmr yet so cant comment on that. but at 100yrds it blows a 2L full of water all to hell
