20 guage question

I have a single shot, shotgun 20 guage the gun says chambered 3inch modified. What does this mean. Do not want to load the wrong ammo. Thanks in advance all...

I would think it means 3" chamber and a modified choke.

OK....Im not trying to come off as a jerk here, but how do you pass the CFC safety test without knowing if 2 3/4" shells are safe to shoot in 3" guns?

I have other shot guns that are marked 23/4 and 3 inch The way I was taught you match your ammo with the gun no questions.

Its safe to shoot 2 3/4 shells in a 3 inch chamber.
But not to shoot 3 inch shells in a 2 3/4 chamber.

3 inch 20 gauge, means that 3 inch shells are the maximum size of shells that it is chambered for. The shotguns that say: 2 3/4 mean that 2 3/4 is the maximum shell for that gun. You can use a 2 3/4 shell in a 3 inch chamber.


stuff like "modified" and "full" indicates the choke.

Its a good habit and prudent to validate nevertheless in the event of slightest doubt. In general, simply bear in mind the following....

- 3.5in chamber = applicable cartridge lengths 2.5in, 2.75in, 3in and 3.5in only. Note: The 3.5in chamber will apply to 12ga and 10ga shotguns only.

- 3in chamber = applicable cartridge lengths 2.5in, 2.75in and 3in only

- 2.75in chamber = applicable cartridge lengths 2.5in and 2.75in only

Shotgun action type will also greatly dictate the use of the appropriate cartridge length. Example - the smaller 2.5in cartridge will not effectively cycle in semi-auto and/or pump actions etc since those firearms will have a minimum chamber length of 2.75in.

There are a few other variables when it comes to shotguns with short(er) chamber lengths such as 2.5in etc. However, the above should serve most info needs in general.

May not be out of place to mention that you may also wish to further validate choke type and what to shoot out of which choke i.e. steel shot, slug etc.
