Savage Mark II bolt handle

The only way to put on a different handle is to turn the existing one down on a lathe, until it's a straight shank, skinny enough to cut threads onto. Then, a new, internally-threaded, knob can be screwed on.

If I had a spare MkII bolt, I'd be trying this myself on my lathe. Since I only have the one, though, I won't take the chance on wrecking it. It would be easy to make the knob on my lathe, though. One day, maybe I'll come across another bolt...

The bolt handle "IS" removeable... it is threaded in and then brazed on... if you file away the brazing the handle will screw out... HOWEVER... this is not a good idea... the bolt handle is what sets the "headspace." Messing with the base of the handle will mess with the headspace and that could result in more serious problems, potentially rendering the gun unsafe to fire. As mh434 said above the best way to change the boltknob (not the handle) is to cut-off the exsisting knob and grind/thread the handle. The standard aftermarket boltknob thread pattern is 5/16" X 24 TPI. It is a pretty simple process and can be done yourself or by any competent gunsmith/machinist. You can get aftermarket knobs from Brownells (only certain manufacturer's can ship products to Canada) also from Dlask Arms (who can also do the work for you) or from "Bill's Bolt Knobs." I will post a picture below of what can be done (the guns pictured are Savage 93's but are essentially the same as the MKII)... I will also include a link to Bill's Bolt Knobs... he will ship to Canada.

I'm more of a visual guy. Does anyone have pics of how this is done or know where there's a posted tutorial ? It doesn't sound hard, but I haven't done a ton of machining and I like to know how it should look (like where to cut and such).

I could be wrong but I believe .22LR guy may have swapped his bolt for one out of a TR .He mentioned in a different thread that they were interchangeable.

I asked my local Savage dealer (who is also does warranty work for Savage) if he could machine-off my bolt knob, thread what's left, fit a tactical bolt knob on there...you know, like a Savage TR. His response~"why don't you just put a TR one on there?"

Done Not sure how common they are, or how available as a part, but it wasn't an overly expensive thing to get done.

Exactly...I knew I'd told that story recently! :)

Yeah, I didn't think so. If they did I'd definitely get one for my rifle.

Did you take a stone to your bolt at all? Mine is still a little tight. Not too tight I'd just like it to be a bit smoother.

Is that question for me..? If so,"no" would be the answer. Granted, it was a guy who does Savage warranty work who installed it for me, an he looked at it/cycled it a few times before giving it back to me. Seems to run perfectly, maybe even a little better than the original.

Hey Partner... nine times out of ten... the stiff/rough bolt throw is the result of "over torqued" action screws... back them off a little and try the bolt throw again. :)

Thanks I'll try that but it's not binding or anything it just feels like a very close tolerance fit.

Edit: I just tried it with the stock off and it's the same.
