35 whelen

Suggestions on a scope for 7600 Whelen.

A Leupold VariX ll 1-4 mounted low to the receiver works very well on my carbine and recommend it - for woods hunting anyway.

The fixed Leupold 2.5x M8 also worked well in the woods on my rifle version when I had it.

There's one thing I've recently learned about the 9.3 X 62 using RL-17; it's in the same league and ball park as the 375 H&H.

It's quite easy to get 2550 fps from the 286gr Nosler Partition and my 22.4" barrel Tikka. Because I can seat the 286 NP to a COL of 3.36", more powder can be used that what Real Guns used. Their COL was 3.22". This is from a new/modern rifle, so please don't try it in your vintage "whatever"!!!!!!!

From a 22" barrel on a 375 H&H, I could barely make factory velocity from a 300gr (2530 fps). Because the 286 NP has a BC of .482 compared to .398 BC for the 300gr/.375, the 286 NP, 9.3 X 62 exceeds the velocity of the 300/.375 at any range past 50 yds, exceeds it in energy past 100, in momentum past 200 and trajectory at any range.

Just thought someone might like to know:D

(And, I'm a big fan of the .35 Whelen!)

Guys are getting disproportionate numbers out of RL17 in a few different cartridges. I wonder if, given the way 17 behaves, might N550 give big numbers in the x62 as well? Might be interesting to give it a try. Not in my 9.3, that would hurt too badly, but maybe someone with a CZ might give it a whirl?

Hey! I'm a Whelen owner again....LOL!
I'm buying a Rem700 Classic tomarrow morning.
can't wait.
Congrats and welcome back into the fold. The 700classic in 35Whelen is a very nice rifle.

I set my NIB M7600 35whelen factory carbine out for sale on my table last weekend at the Sudbury show. Absolutely zero interest in it that I could discern. Most just don't get the hunting charm of these very rare and handy hunters IMO.

What was the price as marked?

Don't want to disclose that here but it wasn't a fire sale price - and it's not for sale now.

Pricing aside, only one guy out of the hundreds seemed to register on his own exactly what he was looking at and commented he had never seen it cataloged. I think only one guy picked it up for a closer look. That just suprised me. I thought at a gun show more would gravitate to that 35 pump. However we all have our particlar and differing interests. A nice 358 Frontier with scope for 7 bills on a nearby table went unsold too. Now that's just wrong.

I was soooo close to picking up that Frontier. I caved in and bought a .22 Hornet instead. I liked your carbine but I'm not a fan of tupperware stocks.

Thanks! Is your 7600 Whelen a wood model or sythetic?

Had it been a 9.3x62...:stirthepot2:

I was just waiting for WhelenB to add to this.

If I could afford to go to Africa, I would realistic use a caliber that would have ammunition easily available in Africa. The 375 H&H is my first pick.

there is many places where you cant even buy ammo .... and this where come the loan rifle in the hunting camp. there is even some countries where they cant load their own legally (doesnt mean there are not doing it ...)

and other places where 375 h&h is not even the good choice ...

9,3x62, 7x64 and 8x68s will be a better bet.

Had it been a 9.3x62...

Then even fewer would "get it" IMO - and of course it wouldn't be a factory carbine NIB. Speaking metric is not too common here but it should be. :D

However it would make for a slightly better thumper than 35 whelen- if loaded right. Got a friend (bigborefan above) with a Tikka 9.3x62 kicking 286s NPs out at 2590 at last report using ReL17. He's still testing but pressures are so far so good. Pretty amazing IMO.

Funny, I could of sold mine a hundred times in the last couple years...
Must be a Maritimes Love Affair!ha:ha:

I think you are overstating the level of interest for a rifle like that. If it was cheap it would sell, but at the price that it SHOULD sell at it would be a slow sell.

There are lots of folks in Canada that wouldn't give a pump rifle a second thought or look. They are very popular in Ont and Sask, but not so much elsewhere.

I agree totally with what your saying.
But all jokes aside I've had "atleast" half a dozen offers of "full" value...believe it or not!
But its not for sale, and never will be.
I love em! :)

The only thing I don't like about the 7600 in 35W is the 16" twist. From personal experience I know it will work with 250s, but I'd still rather have a faster twist.

Odd how Remington sticks to that slower twist when there is a lot of folks out there that wish otherwise.
