i was just reading my old 1957 Popular Hand Guns book, and back then a colt government model 1911 in either .45 or .38 super was only $74.50. a browning high power in 9mm was $74.50. a Walther mark 11 .22 target pistol was only $84.75. a ruger black hawk .44mag was only $96 S&W .44mag $135:sok2:HR:

Sure, but you also would've only earned 6 hogsteeth for a solid 12 hours of building the pyramids.

So a Colt Government .45 should only cost $621.00 today???
Sounds about right considering how long they have been making them, they don't have to re-tool every year for new models like with cars.
Colt are you listening.

I remember how little recreation money was around then. Don't wish for the good old days, they were tougher than you think.

I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say.

In 1962 my parents first house, newly built on a 100 X 200 ft lot was $12,500, and they could barely make the $500 down payment. My dad was a millwright and made about $1/hour.

I've got a bunch of old catalogs too and they are a lot of fun to browse. I especially like my 1972 Herter's catalog.

For most, there's not recreation money, just recreation debt.

Sad but true. Expectations were so different back then. A modest home, 1 car (that Dad worked on himself), a new fishing rod at Christmas and a few long weekends at the family cottage in the summer. We were happy with that and did lots of things with family and friends. Mom was home to raise us right and heaven was the back 40 and a brand new tin of pellets. Oh, and if something broke you would fix it because it was made of wood and metal not cheap plastic and Chinese spit.

Now people EXPECT a 3000 sq.ft. home, 2 brand new vehicles (more if there are teenagers who "need" their own car), a gluttony of electronics to entertain them, cruises to the Caribbean and dinner out/order in twice a week. Most are so busy working they pay others people to raise their kids and hardly spend anytime with family. Kids are either glued to the XBox or texting/Facebooking their "friends" who they rarely actually see.

I know it's not that black and white, but that general trend is what I blame for the degeneration of our society. I could easily go off on a rant...
