i wish it was still 1957.

1957...

In 1957 my parents, on a 1/2 acre lot that cost them $500, built a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house, with single car garage & full unfinished basement. My Dad, who was a carpenter, framed the entire house for the cost of another $500. They were then able to secure a small private mortgage [because none of the local mainstream banks would give a bank mortgage on rural property in the area at the time] to finish the house. They did this while my Dad worked full time during the day as a carpenter at $1.25 per hour and my Mom worked both in a bakery and also for a photoshop. In the evenings they both had a nite jobs in town cleaning offices. Their house was built/finished on the weekends until it was done.

i know back in the 50's and 60's my grandfather was working on the boom boats to move logs down the river/lake superior. in the day he said it was damn good money that he was making, and he was only making $1.50/hour. in the 70's he was making about $2/hr, then in te mid 70's when he started working on tugboats it jumbed up to $2.60/hr. then ever since then it was naturaly growing as the dollar changed, and since he worked his way up on th tugs (deckhand (70's) ,then engineer assist (70's), captain(80's-05), owning his own tug company (89-94), captain again, then retired) and now were proud to say that he hold the name of being the oldest (living) local tugboat captain in our area.

I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say.

Lol. Abe?

If it was 1957 again, I would go to the GM dealer and order up a new silver-blue fuel injected Corvette, with a hard top and a soft top, for myself. Then I would order the same thing for my wife, but in red. And then I would order a two door Cadillac convertible, maybe in black. The cars would cost about $8,000 each.

Of course I would order a new 1911 while I was at it. I might even pay an extra $20 to have my name engraved on the slide.

Here's the original invoice that came with a 1957 Colt. As you can see, Colt charged $19.50 extra for engraving the owner's name on the gun. (I edited out the serial number and original purchaser's name, address, etc.)

And here's the gun.
