Primer Pocket Swager for .223 questions

Hey Guys,

I load a tone of handgun ammon on my 650 but have never ventured into rifle ammo yet. Soon I'll be single staging some .308 and loading .223 on my 650. I know I'll need a case trimmer for the .308 for sure, what about the .223? Also what are my options for a Primer Pocket Swager? I bought about 1200-1300 .223 brass that has a primmer pocket.

You'll need a case trimmed for 223 as well as 308.

I found that the VLD inside chamfer tool nicely cuts out the crimp on swaged pockets on 223 ... but I run a 1050 now.
 
1300?!?! Did someone toss a sandbag full of C9 brass from Gagetown your way ;-)

The Dillon Superswage works good but it's one case at a time... Mount it to a small piece of wood and swage while watching a movie/TV.

But better yet, find a 1050 owner and have a few beers with them. Much easier.

As for the .223 on the 650xl, buy a second tool head, add in the RCBS Lube Die #1, sizing die and the Dillon 1200 trimmer. You'll have that brass prepped in no time.

If you go for the Superswage, see the mod to add elastics and string to make it semi-automatic.

I have a Dillon Super Swage 600 that I was using on IVI brass. The downside to the unit is that it can be really stiff to operate and it still leaves some material behind that requires a quick spin of the de-burring/chamfering tool to remove this excess before the brass will flawlessly pass through my Hornady LNL press.

That said. I've gotten so annoyed with having to double my steps that the last 400 pieces of IVI I processed, I just spun the de-burring/chamfering tool around the primer pocket once per casing and had the same results as swaging and then de-burring. Sure, it's not as pretty to see that metal scooped/bevelled away from the primer pocket, but the Dillon swaging tool is so far from perfect that IMHO the ugly primer pocket is perferred over the headaches I've had with trying to pass a piece of brass with a residual crimp left in it through the primer seating station in my press.
 
I use the RCBS primer pocket swager combo kit. In my Rock Chucker I can easily do 500 an hour. Have had it for years.

Borrowed a Dillon swager for a weekend,did a few hundred pockets but still prefer the swager chucker set up.

Did you have problems with your push rod? The end splayed on mine and I eventually could not get it to enter the case. I decapped with the sizing die, not a dedicated decapping die.
