I was watching a Youtube video about cleaning the black powder revolver I just got (come on ATT!) and in the comments someone mentioned and swore by this apparently amazing stuff called Ballistol oil. Invented in Germany, it was used by the german army up untill 1945 on metal, wood, leather-basically anything you'd want to oil. It mixes with water so when you use it on your BP guns for cleaning it leaves an oily residue when you're done. It is non-petroleum so it doesn't make fowling worse or ruin so called seasoning.

I see they sell it at track of the wolf, but I haven't been able to find it at a Canadian vendor. Has anyone heard of this stuff, have any comments on it or know where to by it up here? It sounds pretty amazing, good for metal, good for wooden stocks.

The fact that it mixes with water makes me think of the cutting oil I've heard recommended for making moose milk patch lube. Any feed back or comments greatly appreciated.

w ww.ballistol.com is the original site for it, but no dealers listed for Canada.

I bought some from wanstalls before "dealer above". Not sure if they still have any though.

Its annoying how hard this stuff is to find. I wish mainstream stores carried it.

I got mine from a sewing machine supply house in Toronto. Peter Smith I think is the name. I just googled Ballistol, and set the search critieria for Canadian sites only. It has been awhile since I bought some, and will have to get some more myself.
It is the most amazing product I have used in a very long time. It makes cleaning up after shooting black powder easier then cleaning up after smokeless. It takes me less time to clean all my guns after a cowboy match. Check out Mike Beliveau's videos on youtube. He. He goes by duelist1954. Lots of great info on shooting black powder. More then I found on this forum.

Re: Ballistol

After a bit more research I was able to find that Peter Smith Trading site. Its called Passap Canada, and says its a division of Peter Smith Trading. The stuff is more expensive than I thought, but I understand that it goes a long way. It looks like its cheaper there than from Track of the Wolf. The Track price is a fair bit cheaper, but the only shipping option is priority post, which makes it much more. For 2 x 16oz. bottles, $48 CAD vs $54.39 USD at Track.

It sounds like fantastic stuff for just about everything.

Ballistol is great stuff and does go a long way.... I use it in my Moose Milk patch lube and for cleaning. Worth every cent and the trouble to get it. Good luck.
