I bought this Israeli Mauser recently off a fellow Gun Nut,and decided I didnt like the "ugly ass" Russian red varnish on the stock!so what to do?well give your good buddy,(another Gun Nut) a call and ask for guidance(as he has restored several milsurps to former glory)and under his guidance as a eager Padawan I learned the art of "stock restoration!"first off I disassembled the rifle down to the stock, then a liberal amount of Circa 1850 was applied to the stock. We let it sit a couple mins then scrubbed the stock vigorously with fine steel wool.Well I sure was impressed by A:) this crap works good! B:) there was a laminate stock hiding under the Russian red goop!

Next My buddy gave me instructions on finishing the stock and gave me the reins!I let it dry over night then scrubbed it down with ultra fine steel wool.I added my first coat of BLO and let it dry overnight. The next day I checked out and the stock wasn't the color I was looking for.

I did a bit of research and decided to give the stock a wash with mineral spirits, let dry, scrub it down with ultra fine steel wool, then apply a coat of 50/50 mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil.I liked what I saw so I repeated 4 times, then the last 2 coats another buddy(ex-army) suggested I actually boil the linseed oil in a pot then apply.I took his suggestion, and I really like the results!so here she is,the before and afters.

Thanks for looking, any and all comments more than welcome :)

All I can say is: WOW!!!
Are you sure that's the same rifle? Going by the "before" pics, it's hard to see that there was a laminate stock underneath all that gunk. Great job, your efforts have definitely paid off, she's a real beauty!

Its amazing the gunk that will come out of those RC stocks eh? I had globs of oil/dirt/varnish/shellac/grime etc... leak out of mine.

Good job on that restoration, i was planning to refinnish it if i didnt sell her to you. Nice grouping at 100yards with open sight.
