SKS, 858 and Milsurp Ammo Test RESULTS POSTED

lejarretnoir asked "How does that #4 T shoot?"

Very well. It was tuned up almost 70 years ago. All I did was tighten the screws and clean the barrel. This load might be a bit mild, but it looks like it is trying to shoot.

By the way, it was lejarretnoir who built the 7.62x39 test rifle for me. It works like a charm. I got a 22-250 magazine for it and that seems to feed the 7.72x39 ammo perfectly. the next step will be to develop some handloads for it so I have known good ammo for testing the SKS rifles as I try to figure out how to tune them up.

it is clear to me already that the milsurp ammo is capable of much better groups then i am getting from the SKS. The rifles will need tuning. The first step will be to run a 1/2 x 20 tap through the cover pin hole to anchor the cover.

Luke S asked "What kind of scope mounts on the sks's?" All three look like this:

The Chinese military cover is very tight. It has to be seated with a rubber hammer. The other two were loose, so they were made tight with a 20 thou shim, like this:

But after I added these shims, I read this on CGN. I will make this mod next week:

This is from Marcus on Survivers SKS Boards. Total cost 1 x 1/4-20 round head bolt

Guys, there is an alternative. Use my 1/4-20 button head adaption and she will hold zero and is removable for cleaning.
1. Remove the dust cover pin, bolt, carrier and spring. (pin will need to ground)
2. Replace the dust cover.
3. Do not drill the hole. Tap a 1/4-20 (or finer) hole all the way out the other side from right to left. THE DUST COVER MUST BE ON WHEN YOU DO THIS. Or the threads won't line up properly.
4. Screw in the 1/4-20 heat treated, button head. Cut it off close to flush. Take it off, trim it, blue the end.
5. Put it all back together and go sight her in.

It's not everyday one gets to see never mind shoot an unissued #4 T.
You need to post that in the Milsurp forum for genuine praise.
Yes, I do believe the T was built well and can shoot straight :)

This #4T shoots a lot better than my other one that was issued and well used. The barrel in the old one is a bit rough. This week I will replace it with a new barrel, keeping the old one, of course, to preserve collecting value.

This is simple and brilliant actually!
By just tapping and not drilling you can still go back to the original cover. Saves drilling and tapping receiver holes.

This test proved that the SKS does not shoot as well as the ammo. There is room for improvement.

The next step is some rifle tuning. I hate doing tests with two variables, but the testing takes too long to repeat for each variable. The next test will involve replacing the action cover with a bolt threaded through the receiver and cover hole and also removing the bayonets. Hanging a folded bayo on the end of the barrel must really screw up the harmonics.

I took the Milsurp ammo apart, to see what is in it. It all used extruded powders, which are probably cleaner than ball powder. Powder charges ran from 23.3gr to25.8 gr of similar looking fine extruded powder.

All bullets were steel core except the Wolf HP and the Yugo, which were lead core.

The Yugo and Romanian were brass cases. The Russian was copper washed steel. The others were lacquered steel.

This is what I wanted to know about the scope mount. I am wondering if the receiver threaded mount will improve anything
