I am loading mostly Win brass when available but I have some 45/70 Hornady cases too. I have been told by several others that the Hornady is high quality and others disagree. Wazzup?
 
Hornady cases are very goods, time will tell if they can withstand many reloads, got to reload 20 pieces for my 208 gr Match 308 and from now i dont see no difference in group size nor POI... JP.
 
The 45/70 leverevoulition brass is about .080 short in length, this becomes a problem when trying to crimp over a canalure in a conventional seating die, My RCBS seater will not apply any crimp to Hornady brass.

Other than that it is fine brass.
 
To me, QC at Hornady needs to go a step above what it is now....

About hornady brass, the ones ive ever used was the Frontier 338 win mag brass and found the primer pockets were not up to task..maybe it was just me !
 
Guys, it is BASIC brass, and the box is marked as such!

It is purposely produced without shoulder or neck for reforming to whatever cartridge based on the Ruger case you may want.

Norma does the same thing in H&H BASIC brass.

So the cases I have are from Leverevolution factory loads that I have fired thru guns I own. I will check the length against new Win brass and see how the pockets prime up. I collect for a large club as well and often see Hornady shouldered brass. Seems to go quickly when I sell it but then this is fairly specific stuff being a big case and all. I may just stick with the Win brass.

In my limited reloading experience my Win brass is rough and stretches far more quickly than my Hornady brass. If I had a chance I would trade Win for Hrn at any time.

I was looking at 17 Hornet brass, and found one comment that the bottom of the primer pockets and flash holes were not uniform, which lead to uneven seating depths. A little disappointing as I am considering the Savage Model 25 in 17 Hornet. I would consider forming my own brass instead.

if you are reloading for leverevolution bullets in hornady brass they are fine. You need to trim that much off other 45/70 brass to reload those bullets to obtain the proper COL. It is true that a regular die will not put a crimp on it when it is that short. I had to cut the bottom of my RCBS die down and it worked fine for crimping the shorter brass and does not affect loading regular length brass. I also believe the quality of Hornady products are par for the price.
 
Well if this a nrmal thing, then someone have to explaon why the other bpxes hafd shoulders and HEADSTAMPS.
 
Question....I am need to by dies for loading my 45/70 leverevoulition brass, if crimping is a problem and some of you have modified your RCBS Dies to correct, what die set should I buy so I don't have any problems? Do the Hornaby Dies have this problem? Recomendations please......Sorry I know we are a little off thread topic.......

It's like going to Timmy's and ordering a plain doughnut and wondering why the guy next to you has chocolate frosting on his.

All this 45-70 hornady brass talk seems like a pain in the ass, Ive tried the Starline brass and it seems really good and recommend it. Same for Winchester and RP.
