Hey guys. I'm a newby to the gun world. I read the beginners guide and decided on a .270. Any suggestions on a nice bolt action that would be under 800$? Any other suggestions would be great.

there will be plenty in the EE, if you have not applied for the EE priveledges, do so and shop to your hearts content. there will be all kinds of good bolt action 270's under your suggested shopping price. If you're having difficulty finding one, I know where there is a dandy Winchester M-70 Featherweight 270 under your price max. Just PM me for the details and pics.

Welcome to CGN . If your looking at just the rifle and not a scope rifle combination for $800 you have a lot to choose from, here are a few; Winchester M70 in several configurations, Remington 700 CDL , Tikka, Savage American classic and as mentioned some older models on the EE like Carl Gustov models among others. Make sure you don't skimp on the scope, the cheapest I would go would be like the Bushnell Elite or the new Redfield class of scopes.

Why a bolt??

Remington pump is normally just as accurate.

didn't you read the OP's post thoroughly? he's read the beginner's guide, and is all set to go!!! there is no mention of pumps in the guide, it's all bolt's, man! It's right there on page one, newbie's start with bolts to develope accuracy skill and have joyish fun, and not loose interest in the sport with pie plater's, you know, one here, one there and where'd that one go? then venture off to the pumps, levers, s/a's etc, standard procedure, has been for years, where ya been? :p By the way, I'm a big lever fan! ;)

I hadn't even thought of the scope yet? Thats something I know little about, anything to stay away from? A good beginner piece?

Leupold, Burris, B&L 3200 or better, the new Redfield, etc. and many more, all on the plus side, names like Sportview, Buckhorn, Tasco etc are on the low end side, there are giant names on the plus side, but I'll leave that for the more experienced to chime in! Just don't skimp on the glass, it ain't worth it! Think of it as "just a get laid thing for tonight" or "wanna get a life time thing going" with her. You know what I'm trying to say!

The first hunting rifle I ever got was a CZ 550 LUX .270win. Its still the only hunting rifle I use and I don't intend on getting anything else. Maybe a .300 or .338win mag the day I decide to hunt Bison. They are a bit expensive but, in my opinion, CZ rifles are worth more than what you pay for. $1120 was what I payed for mine with taxes. I have a Burris 2-7x35mm scope but I've been considering on going scopeless since I have no problem taking a deer out from only 100 meters away which is the distance they always seem to be when you shoot them.

But since you want something $800 or less you may want to look at the Savage package rifles. They come as a whole ready to hunt out of the box kind of deal. My brother got one in .270WSM and its a decent rifle for what you pay for. $650 with taxes. The scope is not great but its a good "for now" scope until you can afford something better.

Head to your local gun shop and fondle as many different rifles as you can. Find one that feels "right". Doesn't matter if they arn't chambered in .270 - Just get a feel for the different manufactures stocks and options.

i picked up a Browning Hunter LBN .270 and have not chosen to venture further in my search. what a pleasure to shoot and accuacy second to none IMHO. plus laid out under $700 c/w scope.

stay away for new package deals. scopes are crap and will eat your budget when you have to buy a new one. for a scope option i have a weaver K6 on my 30-06. its the brightest and clearest scope i own. they are tuff and relibal. i had a K4 that was droped and dented pretty bad. still help zero and adjusted no problem.
4-6 power is all your going to need for big game out to 300yrds. the only thing a 12 or 14x scope is going to do at 300 yrds that a 4 or 6 wont do is see your game flinch when you miss.
as for guns to look at. used: model 70's, parkerhales, ruger m77...... (can you tell what action i like).
new: savage (any but axis), remmington 700 sps, weatherby vangaurd.....

scopes: weavers, redfields, bushnell 3200, if you stretch your budget and get a deal on the gun. ziess conquest 3-9x40

Savage makes accurate rifles for a reasonable price, Tikkas are the same...as far as scopes go the best bang for the buck is a Bushnell Elite 3-9X40, the Rainguard lens coating letting you see in the rain can be a hunt saver... If your budget allows, Meopta's Meostar line of scopes is world class with beautiful sharp glass, and the
price is very reasonable for high end optics. The Elite scope will serve you well,
however, and is a bargain.

$800 is a reasonable budget for a starter set up, as has already been stated go to a store and take your time handling as many as you can. I bought a Weatherby Vanguard detachable mag in 270 and am very happy with it. I also recently bought a Browning A bolt in 300 WM and probably like it a bit better. I own a few Savages and they are my least favorite.right now there seems to be good deals everywhere, so take your time.

Ignore everyone and buy a Winchester Model 70. Sporter or Featherweight, take your pick. That's the correct answer.

X2.

Just did it myself cause I needed to. My cute little Featherweight is now wearing a Leupold VXII and will be shot tommorow with 130 grain Sierra in front of 49 grains of IMR 4064..........just cause.

Better still I traded a 9 pound .338 behemoth with a souless plastic stock to aquire the little gem. All good:dancingbanana:

Don't buy a real nice rifle then put $hitty glass on it.it's like this......if you can't see the target clearly you can't hit it! Quality doesn't cost it pays...........JMO.........Harold

We are enjoying a .270 Ruger Hawkeye I picked up for my son, so Ruger gets my vote. This thing shoots MOA (doesn't everything these days?) cycles nicely, and handles well. Buy used if you must, but its better to avoid the bargain basement rifles, particularly the one sold as a rifle and scope package, those will probably leave you disappointed.
