Damn Porcupines AGAIN, post 167... Nos decided to kill one... PICS POST 49

Well Guys... My German Wirehair 'Nos' decided to kill a porcupine this evening... And, he succeeded... Problem is, he's now at the vets having HUNDREDS of quills removed from his mouth, tongue, sides of his face, chest and paws...

The 'estimate' from the vet is 1k for 2 hours of surgery & 2k for 4 hours of surgery... Vet also said that he's the type of dog that WILL NOT LEARN from the experience... Ugh...

So, my question for you guys is, what techniques have you used to teach a dog to LEAVE PORCUPINES ALONE?

Porkys are difficult with a dog because the more quills they get, the angrier they get, the more aggressive they get and soon you have hundreds of quills.

Work on recall so that he will come back no matter what the distraction. Google it on the net. There are some good tips on how to work recall.

EDIT - or carry a gun that has a muzzle velocity faster than your dog :)

I don't really think shooting the vet will solve anything. :p

I agree with aletheuo, no pet of mine would cost me more than 200.00. That is, after all, about the cost of a new one.

Good luck with you decision. I feel for you, it will be a tough one either way.

HAHAHA. That is sig material right there.

We spent $2000 ($1000 per knee) on knee surgery for ours. Granted, we didn't know the other knee was going to blow as soon as she healed from the first surgery, at which point we were already committed.

Shotgun and a baseball bat and hunt them all down !! Use the shotgun to get them out of the tree then finsh them off with a good hit to the nose! That how we kill them when we where kids .
 
Sounds cruel to some, but my uncle (and the entire town he lives in) train their dogs not to attack the sheep by bringing them into the pen with the sheep while wearing a powerful shock collar. The dog supposedly associates the sheep with pain and stays away. Think everyday shock collars with a little extra juice...

We took a building down years ago up at Mica Dam and the one
worker had a goll dang stubborn Doberman.
Flipp'in dog did the same thing.
Kept rolling the critter over to get at it's neck.
One quilled dog.
I asked what he was going to do with his dog.
Watch.........pliers and pull. Dog tried to bite him and
got a beating. Tried to bite again and another beating.
Eventually the dog relented and got most of the quills out.
If I had a gun, I'd of shot the pair of them.............. :D
Put them both out of their misery.
Dang painful to watch.
Training collars are worth the investment.
Make sure you get one with the high output.
Hope NOS comes out of this okay.
 
I hear ya guys, it's ALOT of money, but Nos is family. He protects my wife & has performed in the field to a level that most never see in their hunting dogs. He's my buddy & as we were driving to the vets on the highway, I was getting ready to keep his tongue out of his airway as his mouth & face started to swell shut... Nope, can't see putting him down for something that he was bred specifically to do, look up predator hardness with the Drahthaar. Every dog before Nos had to kill vermin like racoons, skunks, cats OR they were never bred... The result, a dog that will take on anything you ask him to.

I'm waiting for the vet to call & I'll be going to pick him up at the vets... I'd like to think he learned a lesson, but the vet said he just thinks he won because he killed the porcupine... Ugh...

Small, eh? I simply don't have give my heart the opportunity to connect with a species other than a human being. I have an understanding of what we are put here on this earth to do. We are to be stewards of creation. Putting $2k into a dog isn't being stewardly. It's being wasteful. Unless, of course, the dog is a trained tool and worth that much to replace to do the work. Now, human beings, they are a special creation and priceless!

That's my paradigm. What's yours?
 
Yeah, all those pics are worth whatever vet bill you get.

aletheuo, I am of the same thinking of you. If Nos was younger & unproven OR older and on his way out, he would likely have been put down. But, Nos is 2.5 years old & just entering the prime of his life... The time raising & training a dog can not be recouped... If we lost Nos today, I would be without a pup for the fall & starting at square one with a new puppy...

Not easy choices, but in this case, Nos gets the surgery.

Just when you think you've read every stupid comment on this forum, some subject matter expert shows up and exceeds your expectations.
 
If you can afford the 2Gs for a dog fine. I know vet bills add up fast, one of my beagles got into a fight with a german shepard at christmas. 900 dollars later I get a stitched up beagle. The wife didn't her IPad.

Only solution is to kill every porky you see.

I kill every Porky I see. One was moving into the neighbourhood last year as I was driving home from work. Drove home, grabbed the closest gun and tracked it down and killed it.

The beagles find a skunk every year but so far I have been lucky with the porcupines. if it happens the vet will get my cash. Good luck.
 
Thanks Guys. My dogs have made me a better person. Nos has woven his heart into mine & I can't imagine life without him... Here he is when he first joined our family. I can't remember how old he was in this pic, but he sure was cute!!!
