Just to keep the historical record straight, Taiwan did not "rebel".

The Taiwan government is the legal government of the Republic of China, which was founded in 1911 by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. It was this government, under the leadership of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek, which fought against the Japanese as OUR ALLY during World War Two.

The Communists, under Glorious Comrade Mao Tse-tung (pronounced "mousy tongue" like a Cat?) were the ones who rebelled, taking Allied military aid during the War and even using some of it to fight the Japs (they used more fighting against their own "evil capitalist" government). Under Mao, the legal government was forced out of Mainland China in 1949 and retreated to Taiwan, which they proceeded to build into a most formidable military and economic power, proving to the world that China does not HAVE TO be a starving nation of semi-slaves.

Currently, the Communist Mainland government is run by Glorious Comrade Dung. THIS is the government that machine-guns students who ask for some of that democracy which their government promises, aborts millions of female babies every year, runs many factories on slave labour, takes convicts apart and sell their organs while they are still alive, steal every idea which isn't nailed down and most of them that are patented anywhere else, manipulates the world's money markets and metals markets mercilessly, supports murderous Islamic regimes all over the globe...... and hates our guts and says so, right out loud. This is the Government that the USA under Nixon CUDDLED UP TO and Canada legally recognised under fellow-Communist Trudeau, nearly 10 years before the USA did the same thing......... thus betraying the Republic of China (on Taiwan), our sworn and signed ALLY.

With "friends" such as Taiwan has, who the heck needs enemies?

I have no hesitation whatever buying Taiwan goods and I do wish they would make us a batch of GOOD semi-auto M-14s.

But I buy as little as possible from the Mainland.

This is not some anti-commie nut stuff; it is historical truth. Check it out for yourself.
.

further compounding the confusion is the name of the 2 countries themselves
one is the republic of china, the other is the PEOPLE'S republic of china- mof on my old norc( one of the early ones) there are no markings except made in proc-
about the only thing that i've seen from tiawan lately is the canned chicken- now if nationalist china wanted to take over the world, they should export that stuff in bulk- my god, that's nasty

Ok, look, if you want to go hunting, buy a hunting rifle appropriate to the terrain you will hunt. If heavy bush get an older Marlin lever action 30-30 ($350). If longer shots then buy a bolt action 30-06 ($500 scoped).

You should also buy a good quality .22 RF so you can practice often and cheaply.

SKS rifles are lots of fun and relatively cheap to to shoot, but they are best as a plinker, not as a hunting rifle.

M305 is heavy to carry for hunting, not as accurate as most bolt actions and more expensive to shoot than an SKS.

Good luck and have fun!

The SKS is fine for less than 100yd fun due to accuracy, the CZ is a blast, and has better accuracy. I enjoy the CZ858 more than the SKS by far, but love the history with the SKS. If you're attracted to the history (and cost) of a milsurp and want good accuracy, why not try a Mosin? They are a bolt action, but can be easily fitted with a scope (or you can get a repro with the PU scope). The M14 requires a fair amount of effort to accurize and improve, is heavy and expensive. I'm still a newb myself, so if anyone else wants to weigh in, have at 'er :D

There is, of course, the 10/22 route...can't get much cheaper than that...good for plinking and target practice...

I would say the sks is accurate out to 200 yards at least, mine (russian surplus) shoots 8 shot groups of 7 inches with regularity at 200 m I'm not a hunter but I am sure that's accurate enough for a deer (this is with iron sights by the way) people don't give sks the credit it deserves. It's not a POS! and my cz 858 shoots the same as the sks, maybe marginally better... though this might be my fault

and in all seriousness, any rifle without repeatable accuracy at at least 200 is a POS... unless it was specifically designed for cqb or the like

If youre on a limited budget like I was when making the same call the semi-auto wont help you out really. It gets quite a bit more expensive. I bought an m1a for my first gun and sold it shortly afterwards. .60 cents every time you pull the trigger its gonna get pretty expensive to learn to shoot well enough to hit a deer at medium range with confidence. and as a new shooter youre prolly wanna shoot alot. plus its damn heavy to carry hunting.

As well there ammo issues, some say you shouldnt put commercial .308 in those guns due to tolerances so if you want to hunt with it thats something to look into

If I could go back in time 2 years Id get a cheap but nice savage/norinco .22 to learn to shoot with, ammo costs less than gas to the range.

Learning to shoot is not really an issue in my case. As I've previously mentioned I've shot rifles at a range, and on hunting trips before. I got the basics down. I understand that the .22 caliber is perfect for training and plinking but it's not the versatile round I'm looking for. I really like the Savage rifles, they're proprietary trigger system has nothing but good reviews and their quality/price ratio is great. I'm considering them, along with some Remington 700's, as very good options.

I finally went with a Savage Axis XP chambered in 308. Purchased it today, can't wait to take it to the range. Considering that I'm on a tight budget and that I needed a rifle to go hunting deer with primarily, I think it's a good choice. Thanks for your input everyone.

For your two stated purposes, hunting and target shooting, don't get either of those rifles.

Get a decent bolt-action rifle in .308. Beautiful in its simplicity, and perfect for the job.

Then get a Ruger 10/22, a Russian SKS, and a Remmington 870 Express shotgun for when you just want to make a bunch of noise and maybe hit somewhere near a target.
