Should I get an 887 tactical?

So here's my dilemma. I have a mossberg 500 persuader 18.5" barrel and ati adjustable stock and find it awkward to shoot. The other issue is the stock doesn't absorb much recoil. All around not a fan

I'm thinking of the 887 nitro mag tactical but haven't heard much about em. Thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated

Would I be better off with a 870. I use it mostly as a camp/defense and hiking gun in my scabbard. I think a full solid stock would be better to for recoil

Any other shottys that are good for a reasonable price?

I have a 887 tactical and I love mine.around 10k rounds no problems just the odd FTE with cheap target loads. I have 3 870's and a wingmaster and this gets shot more then all of them. There is no recoil on this thing ever with 3.5 magnum loads the only thing is this shotgun is loud! Comparable to a 8" grizzly
 
I've seen a lot of unfavourable opinions from people who don't own them, mostly based on looks or "I don't get it". Apparently a few early ones had some QC issues.

I love mine. It does seem to recoil pretty softly compared to my 870 clone, despite being lighter. No FTF, no FTE except when I screwed up slug changeovers on a couple tactical shooting courses I took :) If you want to change stock/forend/etc in the future, the 870 is a better choice. But if you like the length and features of the 887, go for it - I think it's a great shotgun if you don't care about a lot of accessories.
 
Recoil management with a shotgun is a function of proper technique. Hold the gun so that you're exerting pressure on the forend away from your body while keeping the butt planted against your shoulder, as if you're trying to stretch it.

Keep your Mossberg and put a regular, non-pistol grip stock on it. Failing that, get an old 870 Wingmaster.
 
Ya do t have a problem shooting it. It's the ergonomics of it that bother me. Can't seem to get comfortable holding it thus the more recoil felt. I agree with the better stock but maybe try something new
 
I've got a field model 887 and I'm pretty happy with it. Its way better than the field model Maverick 88 I had before. Like someone already said before, all the bad reviews done on the 887 are from people that don't even own it.
 
you cant go wrong with a dominion arms grizzly there from a vender here and the price is great and the gun is even better

if you were local too me id let you take mine for the weekend to change your mind,its a great gun but 870 purists wont like it. my old lady calls it the glock shotgun(becouse of the polymer) and she dose i get #####y i hate glock.

Also a good point - I like mine, of course, but it does feel different from my 870 clone in terms of ergonomics. If you can handle one before you buy, do it...you may just not like the way it feels when you pick it up.

One complaint I've heard alot is that the forend is "wobbly", which is true, but no more than my HP9 - but it's bulkier, so the movement is more noticeable. It's never bothered me while I was shooting. The forend also covers the feed port when pulled back. It also uses a rotating bolt that is a little more complicated than the 870.

The gun did get a little more skepticism than ethusiasm from the other shooters on my course, BBB included ;)
 
It's a bit bulky with all the plastic on it. It rattles around and wobbles a bit but not as much as a Mossberg. It is surprising light for the size and feel.

And all that plastic on these boils will trap moisture and corrode the
things out in short order. Yet another Remmy FAIL!
Stick with the 870 or Mossy 590/835 platforms for durability, adaptability
and performance. ;)
 
Even with saying 870>887 the newer 870's are garbage compared to the olders ones! Ill pay more for a used older 870 then a newer one! If im going to buy a newer 870 receiver ill stick with my grizzly its way more solid!
 
I suppose it comes down to this...if, as an owner of both an 887 and a 870, if I had to have only one shotgun, I'd go with an 870. Just based on the huge availability of accessories and parts. But I DON'T just have to have one shotgun, and my 887 fills a void I didn't know existed until I picked one up.

That said, I'm the type to like quirky guns for no quantifiable reason...Circuit Judge, Chiappa Rhino, Short barreled, non-straight stocked lever .357 (which I'm convinced doesn't exist), Keltec PMR30, etc
