Looking into bear hunting this season and wondering how much I should expect to pay have a bear hide preserved?

Whats the best way to go? Head on? just skin and claws? What looks the best?

I'm in the Montreal area if anyone has a good reference.

There a couple city dumps near the hunting site so I imagine the meat wont be edible!!!!

Thanks for the info.

I paid about 300 for a tanned hide. Nothing fancy but well preserved and the fur has held beautifully. If you're going much further than that pay for the full rug.

An average sized bear (5-6') is going to cost upward of $700 for a full rug, lifesize mounts over $1500. Tanned hides are o.k. but don't do much to show the size or appearance of the animal. I've got several rugs so I think my next one will be a shoulder mount.

I had a rug done about twelve years ago that cost $750, and a full life-size mount in '07 for $4000. These were done by a top-grade taxidermist (Advanced Taxidermy, in Caledon). You can get it done for a bit less at a lot of places...but everyone who sees it will know that you paid less.

By the way, if you have a successful hunt, make sure you keep the skull as a secondary trophy that looks great on a bookshelf or mounted on a wall-plaque. It's inexpensive to have the taxidermist clean and whiten it, or you can DIY (instructions are easy to find on-line). If it's a boar, the bone from the ##### (I kid you not!) is a unique little memento as well. Use it to stir a friend's drink...fun for all!

I know a guy that got a rug tanned, just really simple, like they'd have done a centruy ago. I think that's by far the cheapest option; maybe a couple hundred at a tannery.

Or you can spend $1k if you get a full rug, with head, felt + backing.

Or you can spend $3k+ and get a life-size mount, on a pedestal.

Or you can take the rug to a taxidermist, sell it to the guy for a hundred bucks or so, or for a credit on future taxidermy work.

Talking to a friend of mine today and he was telling me the local fur buyers are paying $125 for a raw hide and up to $500 if it's fleshed, stretched and dried. I know I don't need any more rugs so that cash would cover some expenses and I could still have the skull.
