My Savage .17HMR will produce fist size groups @ 250 and my Marlin .22MAG will do the same at 200.

IMHO your right on the accuracy limits for fox hunting with either @ 200 with the 17HMR being slightly better out of the two.

energy is about the same at that distance. but will the 22wmr will be leading in power all the way their. but once again shot placement is the key when using these to calibres.
id go with .22wmr because thats what i have

Either is good.

17 is a flatter shooting round at that distance

Both however will do u fine.

IMO, If you shoot closer than 200yds, the wmr wins hands down.
I have the marlin 983. Great gun!
