A member commented in another thread that this is a Spanish civil war Mosin. How can you tell? Is this the one that is number 8/10 on the rarity scale?
(FWIW I only paid 75 bucks plus shipping for it) :D

Thanks

I was wondering about that myself...

Well the year is in the range for SCW Mosins from Izhevsk and it appears that the serial number is in the probable range too. Otherwise I don't see anything definitely SCW. Not sure if that inverted V over an arrow is re-marking of an Izhevsk arrow or what, or if it is indicative of a SCW rifle. Never seen that before.

It appears to have screwed in sling escutcheons which a SCW Mosin stock should have but that doesn't prove its a SCW Mosin stock.

Other things to check for are possible SCW hangers in the sling slots (hard to tell from your pics) and the top handguard fit. (SCW ones are sometimes loose if they were locally replaced, also the method of making the handguard)

Any MP8 flaming bomb cartouches on the buttstock? That would be a dead giveaway.

Check out this link for more info and what to look for: http://scwmosin.weebly.com/index.html

As Fugawi said - I personally do not see any thing definitive. It sure does fall in the date range though (no idea the serial number range).

Here is a 1927 Izhevsk original Dragoon that I USED to own which was SCW marked with the MP8 flaming bomb and sling hangars.

I did a write up a while back for the milsurps.com knowledge library if you are interested.

I emailed the cgner who sold it to me and offered it back to him for the original price. He told me to keep it for being so honest :)

Why? Its not worth much more than you paid for it. Rare doesn't mean valuable. They fill a nice spot in the collection but most sell for $150 or less if its a 91/30.

Why send it back? $75 is a good price for any decent Mosin.

Even if not SCW (which for some isn't that big a thing anyhow) with that funky inverted 'V' mark' you might have a rare Imperial Japanese Mosin. ;)

Seriously you just might want to post pics on GunBoards to find out about that mark - who knows it might be a SCW after all. Date and range are good. Could be an unknown mark. Or Bulgarian, or Serbian, or Albanian or... who knows.

Are you referring to the badly struck Izhevsk arsenal mark on the barrel?

Dave, before you do anything to it and if you're so inclined, I'd check out that that link to SCW Mosins I provided.

Yours might be a SCW - its hard to tell from pics. Its the right year and in the probable range of serial numbers. I'd check the hangers and look for other identifying marks listed on the SCW web site. And remember too that the absence of some identifying features doesn't necessarily mean its not a SCW. There is a lot of variation.

After reading this thread I came across what I'm almost 100% certain is a SCW 91/30. I picked it up at the Montreal show this past weekend for 100 bucks. Can anyone tell me if I'm right?

MP8 cartouche, squarish hangers, screwed in sling escutcheons, 1937 year of production, probable serial number range... absolutely SCW.

Congrats - excellent price btw.

Very interesting thread! I checked my "arsenal" and found one with the screwed in doohinkeys and squarish hangers, but couldn't find any flaming bomb. It is a 1937r, though. This one must have stayed home.:)
