if you refer to the last crusade, this is not true, the tank is a fictional prop, disney still has it in the USA, it was rotting away in a prop junk yard until recently

I am only going by what Spielberg says: I wasn't there to see the film made (I wish!!!).

BTW, there was also the Italian tinned 'meat product' with an AM label. It was popularly known as "Asinus Mussolini": "Mussolini Mule" in our slang.

Our side had something even worse in War One: Fray Bentos corned beef. My old friend Angus Kellie hated it thoroughly. He was issued a 2-pound can every day for 6 years! Fay Bentos still exists. They have a neat website.

The pink city carved into the mountain also is real: Petra. It is a World Heritage Site but King Hussein gave permission for the film to be made there.

If you're the King, you can DO things like that..... and Hussein did them. A good man and a good King.

The Royal Tank Collection exists as a public Museum. It contains Tanks from the 1920s to the present. King Hussein also had a collection of airplanes, viewable by the public as the Jordanian Air Museum. Their museum got their last Voodoos while we were still using ours as our front-line Interceptors!

BTW, Jordan has a new pistol available, the JAWS VIPER. JAWS = Jordanian Army Weapons System. Rotating-barrel semi-auto developed and made in Jordan. Being a long-time fan of the great accuracy of rotating-barrel pistols, I WANT ONE!!!!!

Petra, AKA "The Rose Red City" on account of it's distinctive red sandstone rock, is a fascinating place to visit. I've been there 3 times, incl once in January when I was snowed in by a blizzard which blocked the roads :eek:(they are light on snow removal eqpt in Jordan).

At one point in time a clandestine visit to Petra was an unofficial initiation rite for young IDF officers. The aim was to get there undiscovered and return with a piece of the the red rock as proof of having made it. A number of them didn't make it as they were discovered and shot by the Jordanians who dutifully played their part in this game. A friend told me about this and kept his "piece of Petra" proudly diplayed in his home.

Jordan always stuck me as a bit of an anomaly among the various Arab countries. It began as an artificial creation of the British after WW1 and has developed into a comparatively progressive country, largely due to the enlightened leadership of King Hussein. I was always struck by the efforts made to provide municiple services like good roads, garbage collection, street lights, working electricity etc in contrast to a lot of the other countries which did next to nothing for the common good in these areas.
 
I love WWI tanks, thanks for the story. I was remembering a story I read about a lone Whippet that ran amok behind German lines and found a link. I read about it in a Military History magazine, but this is a nice read too if you like the way the old soldiers talk.
