Accrding to Mr. Litz the stability will be marginal except in best case scenarios. So it should do good in those hot humid days we have on the way (unless I'm misunderstanding something). It looks like the 77 gr SMK will give you the same BC as the 70 VLD and be a little more stable in marginal conditions.
 
According to Berger's website, the recommended twist rate for the 70 VLD is a 9 twist. Mr. Litz is the one who sets that number...

The 77 SMK does have the same BC, but it cannot be launched at as high of velocity. Between the two, the VLD is a better choice if they both group equaly well.
 
well next time i am at epps I will grab a box to test unless anyone wants to sell me 20 or so? lol

but I really only want this gun for 400meter max so the 69 smk should do just fine

I'll agree if they both group well and have what amounts to the same BC the one you can drive harder is likely better.

I'm making assumptions based on his work (Litz). He clearly states that for a 70 gr VLD to be well stabilized in a 1 in 9 twist barrel the conditions would have to be ideal. "Ideal" or Best Case as he describes it would be 1000' altitude, 100 degrees F, and 100 % humidity. Todays conditons in Central Ontario would have probably been ok but borderline. I'm extrapolating but I think with the high humidity today and the temp around 60 they would have been fine. His work and data from his book explains my experiance with Hornady 68 gr Match. I had great groups with that bullet in the heat of the summer and couldn't get it to shoot in the winter. 69 gr SMK's shot well summer or winter and his figures would support that. According to his work I think we would find 77 SMK's wouldn't shoot well (in a 1 in 9 twist) in the dead of winter in central Ontario either.
