Benelli Supernova as all purpose

What's up guys? I'm about to purchase my first shotgun and was originally looking at the 870 Express and Mossberg 500... Then I started looking at the Benelli Supernova 3 1/2". I have a couple questions..

First off, as I will using this shotgun for many different purposes (wing-shooting, turkey, coyote, and deer), I'm wondering how versatile this model is for all of my hunting needs. I'm planning on buying the field model with assorted chokes, then buying a slug barrel before deer season. I assume it'll work out just fine.

Secondly, is the top of the receiver on the field model already tapped for a picatinny rail or ghost ring sights? I'd like to be able to mount GR sights for yotes, but a rail and scope for deer season.

Finally, and most importantly.. Who's got the best prices on this model, here in Canada? Looks like the Americans are getting them around $500. What's a reasonable price for this shotgun?

A separate barrel is going to cost over $400 and is difficult to find and order. No ghost sights unless you're getting the security model.

Your post is like the third or fourth Benelli Supernova in the last three weeks.

Just keep scrolling through the forum pages of Hunting and Sporting Shotguns. More than enough information.

For what you described you may be interested in a Mossberg 930 combo that comes with a slug and field barrel..

I have both a Benelli Supernova and Mossberg 930. Love them both.
 
The receiver is not tapped.
I checked with Stoeger a month or so ago. They had a rifled barrel @ $495. (there is a recent thread on Benelli barrels).
I abandoned my thoughts of using the Supernova as an all round shotgun and instead purchased a semi auto packaged with several barrels. Time will tell if this was a correct decision.
 
If you want multiple barrels don't go benelli. Like Rick says, receiver is not tapped. That being said, I've put at least 500rounds through mine in the last few months and haven't had a problem, actually not even one single FTF or FTE. I mostly run "Walmart" 100 pack #8 shot, but have also pumped through a few boxes of 3", 3.5" and 3" slugs. The gun shoots great, but the action isn't as smooth as a lot of other guns.
 
Thanks for the help, fellas. PAL should be in the mailbox anyday now. I'm kind of torn between the Mossberg 500 (price is attractive), the 870, and the Supernova... I just can't seem to get past all the features of the Benelli.
 
I own a Supernova and went through the same questions. It is a great all-round firearm as are all shotguns. The feature set (3 included chokes, shim kit) makes it pretty good value. Aftermarket acc. are expensive and hard to find.

I think that the dollar-cost to get a shotgun to take longer shots - if that is what deer/coyote hunting is like in your area - is not worth it when you can buy a nice rifle.

Unfortunately my Uncle's 200 acres where I hunt deer and coyote is in a "shotgun/bow only" zone. The coyotes usually get within 40 yds, so the shotgun will get lot's of use.

I bought a Supernova slug gun in APG Camo from Al Flaherty's. The receiver IS tapped. Now, I could be mistaking it. But I'm 99% sure. There's 4 black dots on top of the receiver, which I assume are the taps. I also got the 24" smooth barrel.

I love it. Since I bought it I've bagged 2 deers and 2 turks.

FYI, Flaherty's didn't have the barrel. You're going to have to special order it or contact Stoeger Canada. But I heard the wait for a barrel now is up to 6 months.

edit: here's a pic. This isn't my picture. But my gun looks exactly like that.

This is funny because you are correct. I always read these when I see Benelli. I own a Supernova, really like it, and have taken a few turkeys and ducks with it. However, getting extra stuff for it is very expensive.

I think we should have our own support thread (LOL). I searched for a rifled barrel for it last year, and ended up just buying a whole new ( used) Remington 870 with a slug barrel, it was actually cheaper than getting a Bennelli one.

I'm no shotgun expert and dont want to get "both barrels" from the shotgun folks but this is my advice. As stated, I also have a Benelli Super Nova.

Its a great shotgun, and I like it, but it was expensive. It points great, and has a camo finish which is great for Turkey hunting. It also has a luminous foresite that aids in low light.

There are a couple of drawbacks. Its very expensive to get extra parts, like a slug barrel, and I find the finish - while I like the camo - gets greasy when you sweat or if it gets wet. While this is not a big deal, and can be fixed with some grip tape, its noticable.

For a combo shotgun, next time I'd get a Remington 870. Barrels and parts can be had anywhere, they are built like a tank, and it can be modified up the hoop. With a Remi 870 Express, and a couple of extra barrels and choke-tubes, there isnt a thing that flys you cant drop. I dont know much about Mossbergs but I hear they are very comparable to the Remingtons.

If its your first shotgun, go with the Remi or the Mossberg. Good luck!

Hence my answer re: field model, "The receiver is not tapped".

Tapping a receiver is not a big deal. $40 in my neck of the woods. $10 a hole as my gunsmith says.
 
Or you can get some clip on sights for the rib if you can live without glass. Thats what we all do here. Also you can probably find a used m2 for slightly more that a SN since you don't have to pay tax on it. I think it's a much sweeter handling gun.

:cool: Sounds like a great setup overall. I would recommend a shotgun then, and I'd also recommend the Benelli.

Sorry, I assumed the field model and slug config were both the "field model" but with different barrels. But you are correct, tapping them is not a big deal.
 
I have a nova (scaled down version of the supernova) and have to wonder how well the polymer action will take to being drilled and tapped? It would not seem to be as strong as drilling and tapping steel.

I love my Nova, even before I did some upgrades. Very well made gun, too bad barrels and such are so bloody expensive. I would love a turkey and deer barrel for it but for the price of those 2 barrels I can get 2 complete combo shotties.
