SR-22
PRO- Non-Restricted > Take it everywhere
PRO- Unlimited Round Magazines > 30 Round Butler Creeks for the Win!

MP15-22
PRO- AR-15 = awesome
NEG- Restricted > Range only :(
NEG- 10 Round mag cap, due to pistol variant
NEG- Lots more plastic than SR22

I've been really tempted to buy an MP15-22, and may still get one. However I've read too many mixed reviews to take the plunge on what looks like a great .22lr AR trainer.

I just bought a second SR22, great deal on EE. I have zero complaints on the gun, it just works and is built like a tank. If I had to bet my life on one of the two, how sad would that be, I'd go with the SR22.

The question should be, out of the two guns, which would you like to shoot.
Owning is totally different! This is because one is one is restricted and the other isn't. Like stated, the ten round mag law also puts the m&p at a disadvantage. Cost ontop of this makes them equal.
Why would you spend $600+ on a rimfire when you can buy a 10/22 or other brand and pimp it out as you like?
However of the two guns I'd shoot the M&P.

If i was going to have a restricted .22 i would just get a .22 conversion for my ar! The s&w is a waste of money.

I own the M&P. I don't have any place to take it that isn't a range anyway, and we run multi-gun steel challenge matches all summer using rimfire rifles. And it is just awesome at that!

Good choice

S&W is a cool gun, but I went with SR22 for reasons everyone has mentioned. SR looks cool plinking away at the gophers.

The S&W is a very tact-cool looking gun, so is the ISSC MK22. Both gun were purpose built as trainers for their respective big brothers, great idea. However they have both been plagued by problems and spare parts seem to be hard to source in canada - I'm no expert but that's what I've read.

The S&W M&P 22 seems to be getting better reviews with later batches, having solved earlier feeding issues etc.

That said the SR22 is virtually complaint free. If I had to critique it, it can be a little over-priced, but the value is there. It's heavy, by comparison, but you get a very, very solid gun with a heavy barrel. It doesn't break down for cleaning that easily.

Point is you're going to have a blast with it, non-restricted fun, firing thousands of rounds - trouble free, for a fraction of the price a .223 gun. Just make sure to use steel lipped 25 round mags, like Butler Creek - or if you want to go fancy get TI25 mags from Wanstalls.

All the best and welcome to the SR22 club - we're a happy bunch.

So how does it run?

I own the M&P. I don't have any place to take it that isn't a range anyway, and we run multi-gun steel challenge matches all summer using rimfire rifles. And it is just awesome at that!

So have you had any issues with it, as others have reported?

I really wanted to try one out, but got scared off by some of the negatives reviews. How long ago did you buy it and from where?

You might as well buy a restricted AR15 and a 22lr conversion kit rather than buying an MP15-22 ;)

the m&p (which I own) is a great little rifle, same controls/function as a real AR. It was really good until they handicapped it to 10 rounds....

now that there are 10/22 promag mags (from marauder kit) that actually look like AR mags, I see little point in the m&p

the SR 22 is pricey once you actually add sights and rails thought

No, no issues at all. It's not from the original run (by serial #). It seems to feed and run any ammo at all, even sub-sonic. I bought it both for the training aspect and because I'm a lefty. I flipped the safety to the right side and I'm adding an Ambi-Catch to it (any AR trigger group component fits).

I'm just waiting for Questar to get the 50 round Black Dog drum kits in, and then I'll be really happy. No more 10 round limits. I'm just glad that Black Dog never advertised the drum kits as being for the M&P15-22P, therefore don't have to be restricted to 10.

Having said that, it's good practice to remember the 10 round limit when switching to her big sister! :ar15:
