What are the differences between these two rifles? Are these worth the money? I want to buy a real quality fixed barrel air gun. seems like these are highly recommended. Any thoughts?
i have a 97kt it is a ashooter 40yard 1inch and goes thew 1 inch chip board at 40 yards ..sos sports has them mail order in creaston BC.at 50 is still in there
I have a 97 now (just got it a couple of weeks ago) and I owned a 77 back about 10 years ago. Similar power and accuracy (very good), and the same very good Rekord trigger. I find the 97 more attractive. Biggest difference is that the 97, with a shorter cocking lever and therefore less leverage, requires more effort to #### than the 77.
The 97 has no ratcheting mechanism in the cocking action. The lever must be pulled all the way back before it will catch...if you release pressure on it during the cocking stroke it will spring back. Some people consider this a negative...it does require some caution while cocking. I actually like this feature, since it allows you to carefully open the lever far enough to insert a pellet into the chamber without cocking the spring. You can then gently allow the lever to return to the relaxed position, and then quickly #### the rifle just before shooting. In a hunting situation this is helpful since you aren't forced to leave the mainspring cocked for extended periods, and yet can shoot quickly when required without fumbling to load a tiny pellet. If this is a factor for you, I would check into the 77 carefully. I think that it has the ratchet mechanism, so the spring is always at least partially cocked when a pellet is loaded. I might be wrong about this...as I said, it's been ten years and a bunch of guns through my hands since then.
Details aside, both of these guns are terrific, probably the two best airguns I have ever owned.
I have the hw77 in .22 and have had it for years. I wanted to iron sights and the ability to add a scope. It's a heavy beast for sure but a good airgun is a joy to shoot. Yes they are expensive, but the quality and accuracy is awsome. These rifles are not to be compared to what you can see in the big box stores. They are real guns, just as sturdy as a good 308.
