Colt ar15 hbar .223

ok i was just wondering why those classic rifles does that sound but newer ar15 like the stagarms model 1 i ve shot doesnt.. another recoil system?

Forget the grease. Buy a new quality rifle spring for your gun. (Wolff Gunsprings) I think the present spring has had better days and needs replacing. The spring presently installed must be some 20+ years old.

I found when these long, large springs weaken excessively, they start to rattle.

NICE i thought there was nothing to do with that rattle noise!!

This is a difference of opinion, but there may not be anything wrong with the spring. Many rifles with full length stocks make the "SHPROING" sound when they cycle. Some of mine do and they haven't even seen 1000 rds. Honestly, I don't think it's possible to comment on the integrity of your spring without knowing the round count of the gun or being able to inspect it. Put it this way, even if a spring is 100 years old, if it's integrity has been preserved and it hasn't been used much, it'll operate like a brand new one.

That said, if the sound bothers you that much, go ahead and replace the spring.

the gun is used but looks to be in excellent condition after seeing the case deflector looks like less than 500 bullets went down the pipe.

what about if i change my stock will i keep hearing the shproooiiing sound?
the stag i tried had a collapsible stock and made no noise after each shot..

Hi guys

Im new here and i dont know very much about ar15 this is my first rifle.. it has a 20" barrel.

I want to know if this is true.. I ve been told that i can't do almost no modifications with my new colt ar15 hbar.. like it is impossible to fit another upper with the colt lower? all i can do this is mount a scope on the carrying handle? can i fit another buttstock? tell me what i can do to this rifle please..

i like this rifle like it is *Classic* but if i can mod it.. it's even better..

Your rifle looks just about identical to mine. I have a Colt HBAR Sporter that was made in late '86 or early '87 (the original manual shows it was sold in Iqaluit in March of '87). It had the double screw front pin, which I've replaced with a pin (.315") from Brownells. Other than that, it's original.

You CAN get a bushing/pin combo to fit a small pin (.250") upper to the large pin lower from Brownells (I have one, just haven't used it yet) or as has been mentioned; a Daniel Defense large pin upper. IDK who, if anyone, sells them up here, so getting one from the US could be tricky.

If you want to "mod" your rifle, I'd suggest getting the bushing/pin combo from Brownells (it's a cheap part) and then get whatever flattop upper you want and can find here in Canada.

yeah a shorter stock would look funny on this rifle with 20" barrel but with another upper it would look like another AR?

Soon i will be able to confirm the identity of my rifle but i think your right.

thanks for the infos guys!!!!

Sounds like you have a model 6601.

AFAIK, this type of production is no longer available.

So, please...keep it original. That would most probably increase its value.

i want to keep it original but I only want to get rid of the spring sound AT LEAST if possible.. was one of the the main reason why i created this thread..

OK my rifle is Colt sporter match hbar .223 and it has the large hole lower receiver. screws not push pins my mistake.

so i guess my only option is to order pins from brownells if i want to buy another upper with a full rail.

I've got (2) Colt A2 HBAR's and they both made the spring sound from day one. Frankly, if that's all yo've got to worry about them consider yourself lucky. At least you don't own a NEA. Sorry, I couldn't resist...

For the carry handle, get a quality mount like the ARMS. If you can find an original Colt 4x scope that would be a great optic. Having said that, a low power magnification scope would be great as well. There are a number of these on the market. A Falcon 1.5x-5x is good as well as the Vortex PST model.

If the spring noise bothers you that much then sell it or trade it. If you're interested in trading, drop me a note. Maybe, we can work a deal. ;)

The triggers in the Colt Match HBars are nice. Shoot a couple rounds out of your Match HBar and then a couple out of a M4gery and prepare to smile. The difference between mine and my Colt LE6920 is like day and night. You can tell which rifle was designed for finicky civilians and which was designed for the quit #####ing and shoot what you're issued you crew.

Try going to the AR-15 parts section of Brownells and search for AR-15 reciever adaptor - part # 231-015-016.

i know this rifle is capable of good very good accuracy for a semi auto rifle.. by the way what does MOA stands for?? i wanna know it..

to be honest the first ar15 ive shot was a stag arms model 1 very used 14" upper and made no noise that's all .. then second time shot the ar15 i've noticed the sounds/vibrations from the stocks not like the model 1 and i was like WTF i can deal/live with it but that was weird not usual felling after firing a single shot pistol or not. i like my rifle but i want to mod it and first time i was asking people AFAIK saying that you cant not do much with this rifle cause its a COLT and when i ve noticed the large pins/screws i ve understood fast creating this thread i gotta order a colt upper or order the pins.

If you plan on converting it to a flat top and you don't have the upper yet then I'm still going to suggest the Daniel Defense large hole upper. It's a straight swap and you won't have to mess with unscrewing conversion pins every time you want to seperate the upper from the lower. It also comes with a single piece pivot pin that's held in by a spring ball detent, very similar to the method used on the original 601 rifles.

Wolverine carries them, just make sure you specify non M4 ramped upper if you plan on using the barrel that's on it now.

As others have said, don't worry about the spring noise, completely normal.

Minute of Angle. Suffice it to say that MOA translates to 1"@100yds grouping (all 5 bullets land in a 1 inch circle) of your shots.

If you can do that consistently you're well on your way to becoming an excellent shot.

Untrue, if you look at our C7a2 (I believe), it has a telescoping stock... You can also get something like a Magpul UBR or PRS stock if the LOP isn't quite right for you.... Though you'll loose that classic a2 look... I think that'd really be the only mod I'd do, so that it's a little more custom to you.

If you're looking to pimp it out, just get another upper and play with that... That's the beauty of the AR platform, it's so customizable.... Just be careful, it adds up REALLY quickly

Edit: I think you might be interested in this scope mount for you carry handle
