I've been shopping around on a few of the sponsor sites above for a nice 1911 and I've noticed on their order forms many of them require the name on the gun club I belong to before I can order a restricted. Is this normal practise? Don't I need to get a pistol before I can apply to join a pistol/revolver club in my area?

Thanks.

To apply for an ATT you need to be a member in good standing at a gun club and may be required to provide documentation as such. However, you do not need a pistol to join one.

My club requires you OWN a pistol before even joining. The CFO will issue you a temporary ATT to bring the gun home, in your case it will be mailed to you so you don't have to worry. They will not issue you a long term ATT unless your a member of a club. Just put down the club you were thinking of joining when buying the pistol. Once its home its stuck there untill you join a club and get another ATT. If you've never had one most clubs have a pistol training course they make you take. All a pain in the ass but worth it.

This.

A lot of you started in on ATT's but that's not what the OP is asking! Besides, when purchasing from a retailer they will get an ATT for the customer when he/she decides to make a purchase. It doesn't get mailed home.

OP: To purchase a handgun in Ontario the CFO (knob) likes to see that you're at least trying to join a club. I've purchased a couple of pistol prior to joining a club and I always went with "I'm planning to join ____________ (Fill in the blank) for the purpose of target shooting". Talk to the retailer and explain the situation. It's quite common.

You don't legaly need to be a member of a gun club to buy a restricted. But since at this time the only valid reason (in the cfo's world) to buy a restricted is for target shooting it just calms the water to either be a member or say which club you plan on joining.
