M305 or M1 Garand? Can't decide.

Patience is key, I waited for some time to find my M1. Then walked into Italian in van last Christmas and there it was, sitting on the consignment rack in an ugly synthetic stock. Now I get to wait all over again while nick of vulcan gun refinishing works his magic

Nice. There are 2 on the EE, but they seem pricey. One is 1600 and the other is 2500.
I saw one last week that would have been a good candidate go for 900 or so.
Waiting game I guess.

I also have both, bought the m14 to play with and kept an eye out for an m1. Finally found one at the Calgary gun show. Guy had 4 for sale that were reconditioned by Springfield awhile ago. I managed to snag the last one and used the girlfriend for collateral while I went and took out the cash. Brought her home covered in cosmoline....the gun not the girlfriend.
In my mind the m14 is nice to modify and make it what you want, but nothing beats shooting the garand and counting down to the ping.

If you are considering a Garand,..then $1000-$1500 must be in your budget.
If this is the case,..by all means get both!
Shoot the Garand sparingly and enjoy the nostalgia Ping, and pound the guts out of the $400 Norinco M-14 with cheap ammo, really learning to shoot this type rifle over iron's.
A win-win siuation.

If the one on the EE for $1600 was chambered in .30 06 rather than .308, then I would make on offer on it. $1500 is the upper end of what I want to spend. I have seen some nice ones go for $900, so for $1500 it had better be pretty nice.

Sidebar - has anyone found a source of 30-06 FMJ ammo? I think the last I found was some S&B at TSE... like $18/box or something... any other options than 'Winchester Power Points' from Crappy Tire? Blasting ammo - not hunting ammo!
If you have a Mccann or Shuster gas plug then American Eagle AE3006N is about the cheapest Ive found @ $19.99/20 at wholesale sports. Its a 150gr. BTFMJ @ 2910 fps, a little too hot for the factory gas system. It will cause premature ejection on the 3rd or 4th rd with most clips unless you tone it down with an adjustable gas plug. Still $1/shot though. Reloading is really the way to go for the Garand.

If you don't do one of the above, you risk destroying the gas op-rod at the very least. (about 100 dollars if you can find a replacement part)

If you Google "M1 Garand loads" you wll find a number of good websites explaining what is good and what isn't in a Garand.
Many of them strongly discourage commercial ammo.
