It doesn't matter if it is a variant because it is not prohibited! Only those specific ones were because they had a faulty trigger mechanism. These have completely different mechanisms and are non-restricted, as they both should be.

If the type 97 had a redesigned trigger mechanism that could pass the RCMP's bull#### test then they would be good to go.

I was under the impression that the trigger mechanism was taken from the 540 or something like that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

lets get serious here.. the only reason why the t88 is allowed and the t97 isn't is because the t97 costs less than $1000 compared to any other bullpop.

Please don't quote wikipedia. Wiki also says that the export version takes STANAG mags, which is not correct.

The Type 97A and Type 97 are completely different designs, and share next to nothing in common (if anything.. maybe a screw). And seeing that the QBU-88 or KBU-97A are both semi-auto from the ground-up, there is no reason for the firearm to be anything but non-restricted.
