Got totally frustrated at trap the other day and finally decided to ask if anyone here can help get me back on track. I went into a mode where I was shooting too high and it took me 3 misses to get back on. There's nothing new about this, if I have a problem when using my BT-99 this is the one that comes up. When it does I drop my hold to a lower position. In this instance I did the same and ended up holding below the edge of the trap house before coming back on line. It's reasonable to miss the odd shot in a round, but this problem got to me because it cost me 3 birds before I got back on. Sometimes I can anticipate a change on the basis of wind change or bird flight or how I hit. But the problem has gone on long enough with the gun that I'm frustrated and feel a minor adjustment of the gun itself might help me. Of course, the gun patterns well at about 60/40 when I test it. So, something is happening while I am shooting from the line. Can anyone suggest how I should approach this? I'm flailing around with it:confused:.

Shooting "High"

Just say no!

Are you wearing cowboy boots with big heels like Daro does? Are you shooting one eye or 2? I'm a one eyed shooter and always hold below the top of the house.

Are you maintaining good cheek contact with the comb while shooting ? If the drop at heel is lower than the drop at the comb, extending LOP will position your head further back on the stock and result in a lower POI. That may be what the previous poster was suggesting. 60/40 is not that high for a trap gun so the problem may be not be gun related.

OK, so I quit the drugs :D and quit blaming the gun...fair enough:p. The stock is kind of a minimal Monte Carlo style with the line slighly rising toward the butt pad. Increasing the LOP will change my head position back and probably raise it slightly...unless I reach forward more, of course. But my hand position is just on the edge of too far back now. Cheek weld does feel a bit soft at times. I have thought I might drop the butt pad a bit to bring the gun up into my cheek more using the same shoulder position...maybe 1/8 inch will do it. If I scrunch my head down too much I get a sore neck. I have noticed that the chap that owned the gun before me did shave the top of the stock somewhat and this kind of confuses me a bit. Appreciate the comments, thank you...fred

Sorry Bogman missed what you said. I'm shooting two eyed...jeez, I have enough trouble without closing one eye:(! Holding the gun on the back roof line on our trap is a low hold for me. I'm pointing just above my foot level with that hold. OK, I'll drop the elevator heels, it might cure everything. For a second I was worried there as I'm sure Daro said they were important. But I couldn't find them on the list. The idea there is a mental side to the problem is probably right too, there usually is. In fact, a guy might have to be mental to take up the shooting game. I don't like to miss, but I don't usually get down on myself. I also usually adjust something after a miss even though it might only be a slight foot position change. Think I'm going to try dropping my butt pad (on the shotgun) a bit and see what happens. Should get some idea how it goes this Tuesday at practice. Most likely I'll start shooting low, of course:rockOn:.

Fred,
When I shoot high I often find I am rocking gun up to target and flipping over. I find I do this more often when my back hurts. When I concentrate and start my movement from ankles and hips and stay with gun I do better.

Thanks CR I'll watch for this. My back was all right, but I could be moving my arms more while trying to adjust. Interesting thought.

My shooting has gone down hill these past few months.. Went from shooting 20-25 to 14-20's!!

No idea what the hell us going on. Same gun and shot size and everything.. Just figure my posture or im shooting with one eye. Next time i go out I have to go step by step.

This happens to me too Mattones. I noticed that I don't feel well and I don't feel like shooting prior to this happening and I usually take a week or so off. Today I shot with my butt pad down 3/16 of an inch and watching to make sure my swing was not too fast and coming from the body. I shot 23 in singles and 23 in handicap. Skeet went 23 and 23 too. Not a bad day really. Sometimes the interest of just trying something new seems to bring a guy back too. Not sure how I'm going to run straights though. Keep trucking Mattones...Fred
