I am going to be getting my first SKS really soon
concerning stocks ,i have a preference for the hardwood so far just esthetically that deep red grainy appearance really pops for me.
However being inexperianced i was wondering what i am missing
is it purely a matter of preference visually or are there other factors to consider?
Thank you

The laminated is a bit slimmer but stronger than hardwood, can look awesome too. Myself, i prefer the hardwood. From collector view, if i get sks made before 1956, i want them with hardwood since they are the correct type of stock even if laminate started to appear in 1955, also, laminated were frequntly used during refurb to replace a damaged hardwood stock.:)

Agree with all replies.

I like the wider grip on the hardwood because it makes shooting the mild recoiling SKS even nicer. The narrow grip on the laminated stock feels good to me, except upon recoil.

As for looks, it's a personal thing. Many people like the lam, but I much prefer the solid birch look. If the lam had more laminations or higher quality wood (as in Boyd's), it would look better, IMO. The lam has little appeal to me except for its increased strength, which could be the reason for the change to lam's existence.

I have solid and laminated stocks on my SKSs.
