Holster training / Blackbadge Course

I don;t shoot Cowboy Action...but I am amazed at the number of clubs in Canada (and the US) that have started shooting CAS in th elast 5 years. The growth spurt far exceeded anything we were seing in IPSC (purely in number of new clubs)

They had some catching up to do...they caught up.

There are less CAS shooters in Ottawa compared to IPSC, but almost as many clubs, and definatly more matches.

Really?

I keep hearing that but I don't any evidence of it around here.

Is it actually a fact where you live ??

this is my opinion, bear in mind I am the president of a large gun club in BC, holster courses are a waste of time at the club level. absolute and total waste of time. They are not required by law, nor are the what I would consider Best Practice either. In every instance I've seen they are simply used as a tool to control people and inflate egos, and often, pad the pockets of those who came up with the idea.

Oh SNAP!!!

Do you have a club level holster course? What requirement do you have for holster use on your ranges? Cowboy for example has no holster training or qualification system and if they did, it may help the sport to gain wider acceptance. How for example do you know if someone arriving from another club to your range is safe if they have no qualification?

Baking Powder? Squeeze me? Are the lights on? What colour is the sky in your world? Cowboy is the fastest growing action sport. And to say Cowboy has no holster training or qualification system is like saying they use blow darts in IPSC. In Cowboy, every competitor is certified at every match, everyone is treated the same. Everyone. Get some facts straight. You don't need a piece of paper to tell you you are qualified. Absolute foolishness. Don't drag the cowboys in with other nonsense. We take care of ourselves quite well thanks.

You do realise that that Cowboy Action is one of the fastest growing shooting sports...if not the fastest growing.

Correct.

Yes Really. In every province. One of the main reasons is that there is ONE governing body if you are SASS affiliated. Those are the clubs we know about. There are some cowboy clubs who choose not to affiliate. Those clubs that are SASS, there are no other bodies in the middle. The SASS rules are easy to follow and make bringing cowboy to a club a breeze. The CFO's will approve a club for cowboy based on them saying they will SASS affiliate. Yes they will, witnessed it happening.

I'm with Slavex on this one. I don't like the idea of mandatory holster courses, especially at club level. Why complicate matters.

And a second... Oh SNAP!!!!

Some people will just never believe that people are competent enough to use a holster without someone holding their hand & some people believe that they are gods gift to the world and that they can do no wrong. This is why any discussion of holster courses is always going to be like d:h: d:h: d:h:

Hey Tuco, I am somewhat familiar with what safety measures SASS clubs and matches have in place and I did not mean to imply that I would like to see proof of holster qualification such as the black badge. I am just saying that there is no such proof of qualification or competency at this time under SASS.

I also realize that Cowboy Action is growing very quickly and I think that's great! What I am getting at is that for clubs that are already running, say IPSC at their clubs the question of holster "qualification" often comes up with SASS. The question is something along the lines of "Everyone that competes in IPSC must complete the black badge course. I need to make sure that everyone is safe while on our ranges". The answer to the question is somewhat long and not as easy to understand as it would be if there was a SASS holster course. That doesn't mean I am saying that one is needed!

IPSC has black badge, SASS has no equivalent. Whether it needs one or not is a different topic of discussion.

No to take it out of context or turn it into an IPSDC thread, but...

IPSC only has Black Badge in Canada and one or two other countries, most IPSC competitors world wide don't have the BB.

and I'm pretty sure ( I could be uniformed) that IPSC Canada does not require competing foreign competitors to get a BB

having a BB for holster is the RANGES rule, not the law, my range has no such stipulations

find a better range

and for the record, if you cant figure out how to safely draw from a holster without weekend of supervision, I dont feel safe around you.

and yes, USA ipsc doesnt have BB, and their competitors are exempt.
