I'm thinking that next year I'm going to buy myself a rifle in 6mm. I was looking on Savage's website and the Model 12 Bench Rest in 6 Norma BR (MSRP $1505.00) looks pretty interesting. It has an 8 twist and I was wondering how lite of a bullet it could shoot just in case I want to use it for gophers somewhere down the road. As the title states, would I be better off buying a rifle like this or building one from scratch. If I were to build something I would probably start with a Savage target action. Thanks in advance.

Buy it. Locally my M12 F-class was $1350. So the benchrest wouldn't to much more money.

When you buy it you have Savages backing if it doesn't shoot like it should.

Wow!!!! that sounds great! What is that exactly?

Savages backing? They do what ever needs to be done to make it right I guess. Only ever had a problem with a rimfire.

Both my girlfriends Benchrest and my F-class shoot very well. I'm sure the one you get would to. ;)

6mm bore:
If you are going to be shooting more than 300y sure go 8 twist.
If not, remember that the people in the top 90% of short range benchrest will always be shooting a 13 - 14 twist and a custom barrel.

The reason? More accurate.

Now that I've done it several times, for any rifle I want accuracy out of it will always wear a custom barrel.

The modifier here is that I do it myself so I don't have the smithing costs.

$100 worn out benchrest take off barrels (that can't compete because they shoot in the 3's are more accurate than the vast majority of factory barrels.

Build it.. you get what you want and it will shoot better.. Also if it doesn't shoot up to snuff it can be dealt with here in Canada by your 'smith. All my Savage based customs shoot very very well..

I think the build route will yield the most accurate rifle. If I'm using a Savage action what are my stock choices going to be?

Have a look around and see if you can find one in 1-8 twist, I looked around for a LRPV in 1-8 and everyone only have the 1-12. I ordered one because I was told it would take 6-8 weeks and almost 6 monthes later I still don't have a 6br. I wish I would have just built one if I was going to wait this long.

Personally I would build over buying. This way you get the twist you want and have it chambered with zero headspace and throated for the bullet you want to shoot.

With a bought factory you get the chamber that they decided to put in it.

I've just started to do a little reading and the 6 BRX looks like it needs a little more investigating.
