art of the precision rifle

In just a moment there will be a stampede of ex-JTF3 guys in to tell you how bad it was and how they know so much better.

I enjoyed it.

LoL, ya those and the guys that couldn't see past the product placement in order to understand the theory and practice magpul's video was teaching..

a good combination of both, the one thing i liked the most was how they showed the affects of cant at distance it really opened my eyes. Its a dvd set.

i don't know where it is available, but there is a dvd rip at torrentz.eu, i wish it was a hd version but it will do

one thing i didn't like, when they do the mile shoot, one guy is shooting a .308 AR and at the beginning the instructor says it shoots ''close to MOA'' , so at a mile isnt that just more then 16'', and they were shooting at a 16'' round plate, so once you factor in wind and human error, hit probability should be fairly low i think

anyone watch the Magpul Art of the Precision Rifle?

what did you think of it?

didn't like it at all, it's basically an infomercial for Horus and Atrag.

Personally I feel there is way better info on long range shooting on snipers hide , 6mmbr and even this site FOR FREE. Don’t waste your $$$

there are way better, more informative websites to get this info from for free, without the product placement. nothing they did was revolutionary, the way it was presented was not clear and concise it was just drawn out...all they basically did was use there PDA input info received windage and elevation corrections... shot...hit or missed . input the actual elevation in to the software and showed that it (atrag) will correct the rest of the ballistic trajectory allowing you to obtain first rd hits . oh and that you need a scope level.

I’d check out snipers hide, they also have an online training that you can pay for I haven’t subscribed but from their sampling it seems quite good.( I do not represent this web site in any way.)
and on I'm not JTF but I did stay at the holiday inn last night.

There is some good material there.
But its heavily into the use of the Horus reticle, which I will not be using.
Now a PDA, on the other hand, I could see being quite useful.

I found it educational. I learned some things I didn't know - and watched a cool video about LR shooting in HD.

What's not to like?

I guess after a long wait for it to come out and it not meeting expectations is a large negative in my books, but like you said it is a shooting vid so that in it's self is a good thing.

Found it interesting and learned lots.
Todd the instructor explained concepts well and concisely.

It certainly makes me want to get a suppressor - they shot the entire video without ear protection.

I will give you that it was very drawn out in places while others were rushed a bit where more information could be provided, but overall I found that they were able to simplify concepts and visualize them better than many sources I saw that were saying the same thing (a few i had shown a buddy and he hadn't understood the concepts like calculating windage and mil measurement until he had saw their video).

It is by no means the best training video, but it does provide beneficial information that many of the product placement arguments fail to mention: ie. you may not buy a horus reticle, but having seen the advantage of not having to dial or do less accurate Kentucky windage, may buy a horus-style christmas-tree-style reticle. Maybe you won't, but their inclusion of that does benefit a group of people that would within LR shooting.

I agree. While I enjoyed watching it I am happy my friend spent the money and not me. The only parts I really enjoyed were the interviews where they spoke about LEO and Marine sniper duties.

The irony about that is that much of the stuff being taught is what Rifles Only (run by the owner of Sniper's Hide) has been teaching in their courses for years. Some things, like the way he was gripping the rifle were taken from there, but not done correctly in the Magpul video. Much of the stuff like using the reticle instead of dialing or picking up your zero at extended ranges (scope swaping exercise) is SOP when running and FFP scope. Horus did not invent it, they just popularized it.

I think that overall it is good that the video was released and is gaining popularity. It demonstrates a many concepts that people don't seem to grasp just reading about them on a forum. Most of the stuff in the video is nothing new to those who frequent the Hide a lot. Realize that everything they are doing with the Horus reticle can be done with other reticles that are a lot less busy:

-Premier Reticle Gen2 XR
-Vortex EBR-2/2B
-Bushnell G2DMR

And in some cases, these are more effective. There is a balance between resolution and speed. Atrag is nice, but any of the mobile apps based on JBM are just as good for most shooting.

If the video turns more people onto this kind of optic, that will be a good thing. Right now, the only scope that have the full feature set are the really expensive ones. When more people start asking for them, they will filter their way down the the cheaper offerings. And to optics for other applications like service rifles. They already have on the higher end stuff like the new Leupold CQBSS.

I found it quite informative but it was more of a infomercial for Horus/ Atrag.
Worth the money ............. maybe @ 1/2 price would have made me feel better.

PM for more details.

there was some things they talked about too much (cant) and some stuff they didn't talk about at all,

i didn't hear them talk about what is important to get your gun to shoot 1/2 moa, they didn't talk about reloading/load development or what features to look for when buying a rifle

they also didn't talk about .223

im just glad i didn't pay money for this
