Gents,

I have had the pleasuse of shooting, shouldering and handiling quite a few out of the box "Precision Grade" rifles by all the various manufacturers. I believe that I have finally made a selection that I feel both from research and from handling that is best for me. Before I order this rifle I am putting out a final feeler to the experts on what they feel is the best " out of the box rifle" and why? just in case I have missed one. I am not overly interested in spending thousands on a custom build, only what in YOUR opinion is the best working man's salary quality bolt action precision rifle.

Lets put the purchase price ceiling (optics aside) at $1500.00

Thanks Gents.

Good for you for finding what you want. Hope it all goes well. Personally I'm a massive savage fan. So the 110 BA or model 10's in general work great I think fr precision out of the box quality. However my recent experiences with Tikka tactical T3 has made me rethink a little. Little more pricey. But hardly. I'd stick to my guns though on savage. Yes remington has many options for the 700. But I buy a rifle out of the box ad want it to shoot then and now. Not two months down the line once is ordered god knows how many parts to upgrade it. Savage is a good, consistent rifle out of the box at the price you stated. Many options available. So I won't bother naming them all. Whatever you choose, good luck and enjoy!!!

My most accurate sub $1000 rifle is the Tikka Varmint Stainless in 6.5x55 that I purchased new for $800 when Stoeger was clearing out their stock. Between myself and friends, we have three of them in 6.5x55, and they all easily shoot sub 1/2moa for five shots.

everything other than tikka is a crap shoot. my experience has been comparable to, or more accurate than my custom guns. the stock fits the action like a glove, remove the action screws and there is zero movement in the stock. the plastic feel does take some getting use to.

Buy what fits you physically. Seems Rems have declined in overall quality IMO over the last 20 years. Tikka is too expensive for their plastic mags and pinned action. Savage has really stepped up as far as out of the box accuracy and you can still accessorize it.

If I had to purchase today it would be a Savage I have never owned a poor one in any caliber.

How many of these threads are made in one day anyways?

Search a little bit. 1/2 the users on here hate Savage and love Remington. The other half are the other way around.

You can't go wrong with any of the "high-end" Savage model 12's.

Pinned action..? The barrels are threaded to the action on a Tikka. Savage and Remington use plastic stocks as well, the Tikka's plastic stock is as stiff as Savage's accustock. Take a look down a Savage or Remington barrel with a bore scope and compare that to a Tikka barrel, night and day difference. Tikka rifles are built to very strict tolerances in a very economical and efficient manner, hence the use of plastics and one length of receiver and trigger guard. The Tikka also has one of the best triggers I've ever pulled on a rifle, let alone a factory rifle. I have the trigger on my Tikka set at 1 lb and I can not set it off by aggressively slamming the bolt or bouncing the butt end on the ground. You can purchase a Tikka varmint for around $1000 and have accuracy that mimics the Sako TRG at 1/3 the price.

10 FCP McMillan will out shoot rem700 5R any day, but the one thing about it that need improve is bedding, while rem 700 5r need minor truing of the action.

I looked hard at the Savage 12 VLP. It has a nice laminate stock, and detachable magazine which are pluses to me. I`ve owned a couple of 10FPs,not a big fan of the accutrigger though, way to flimsy for me. So with the accutrigger, and no shorter barrel option I passed. Ended up ordering a blued T3 Varmint. Quite happy with it so far. Sako made up a model number to my specs. Blued 223 1in8 20`barrel and factory installed single set trigger.

Howa 1500 or a 710 Remmy . Just get a TicTac .

You should be shot & pissed on for putting a Howa 1500 in the same league as a Remington 710.

I'm a Remington 700 fan through & through but I also own (3) Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguards. They're relatively inexpensive and the actions have a number of design features that are superior to either a Remington or a Savage. The Howa/Weatherby action is very smooth and the bolt fit appears tighter by feel. Not to mention the fit & finish quality of the Japanese built rifle is far superior to your run of the mill 700 or Savage 10/12 Series.

I've always wanted to own a Tikka and Woodbeef's rifle is precisely what I would buy if I was in the market to do so. I've already got (3) .223 bolt guns at 20" so I think I'm set for the time being. lol.
